You are an experienced optical engineer with a specialization in illumination optics, passionate about pushing the boundaries of technology. Your background in Optical Sciences, Physics, Applied Physics, or Mechanical Engineering has equipped you with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for designing complex illumination systems. You possess exceptional customer interaction skills, industrial creativity, and a self-starting attitude that allows you to work independently and solve interdisciplinary problems effectively. Your engineering judgment and process understanding are top-notch, and you are familiar with mechanical CAD software, preferably SolidWorks or CATIA.

Synopsys’ Optical Solutions Group has an opening in the Illumination Engineering Group for a Sr. Staff Optical Engineer Illumination Designer. The Illumination Engineering Group provides optical design services on a consulting basis to a wide variety of external customers in a wide range of applications that include space, medical, defense, industrial, and consumer markets. What You’ll Be Doing:Representing the skills and capabilities of the Illumination Engineering team to potential customers and emerging markets.Designing highly multidimensional illumination systems using LightTools and other relevant software.Developing LightTools macros and user-defined optical properties (UDOPs) to extend the software's capability.Assessing systems-level and fabrication issues related to illumination optical design forms and approaches.Designing illumination optical system hardware, including material selection, fabrication methods, and tolerance allocation.The Impact You Will Have:Enhancing Synopsys' reputation as a leader in illumination design by delivering innovative and high-quality solutions to clients.Driving the development of cutting-edge optical and illumination designs for a wide range of applications, including space, medical, defense, industrial, and consumer markets.Expanding the capabilities of LightTools through the development of new macros and UDOPs.Helping customers solve complex illumination challenges, thereby strengthening customer relationships and trust.Collaborating with some of the most talented engineers, marketers, and software developers in the field of optical design.What You’ll Need:B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Optical Sciences, Physics, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.3+ years of experience in illumination design with substantial experience using LED sources.Proficiency in LightTools and programming languages such as Macro/VB/Python/C++.Theoretical and working knowledge of radiative transfer theory, etendue, BSDF, volumetric scattering models, and stray light analysis.Experience with mechanical CAD software, preferably SolidWorks or CATIA.U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status is required to access ITAR-controlled projects.Who You Are:Industrial creativity and demonstrated skill in highly interdisciplinary problem-solving.Ability to work independently as a self-starter with excellent engineering judgment and process understanding.Strong customer-focused communication skills, both verbal and written.Team player with a collaborative mindset.We Are:

The base salary range across the U.S. for this role is between $134,000-$200,000. In addition, this role may be eligible for an annual bonus, equity, and other discretionary bonuses.
