Global R&D/Technology Manager

Your role and responsibilities

The R&D Manager plays an important role, driving and fostering a culture of innovation within the department while assisting the R&D Leader to plan and manage R&D activities and resources. In this position, you will support the development of projects and identify the budget for a specific functional area. You will work on ABB’s leading Low and Medium Voltage technology platforms Motor Control Centers, Metal Clad Switchgear, and metal enclosed Switchgear, developing new products or solutions that address critical market demands and meeting requirements for ELSE (Electrification Services) division, fully compliant with relevant ANSI (American National Standards Institute) - IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), NEMA & UL standards. As a leader of the R&D team, you’ll will be supporting Technology manager to establish an open and innovative culture with clear division technology vision and strategy. This is an in-person role in Florence, SC (#LI-Onsite).- Leads and manages complex projects and coordinates work of multi-location and cross-functional project team/s. Motivates and monitors internal and/or external resources to accomplish all tasks and milestones- Support the technology manager for an assigned domain in the planning and management of research and development (R&D) activities and resources- Work closely with Product Managers and leadership team throughout the product development life cycle in a highly collaborative team environment- Support R&D Engineers for establishing cross-functional design reviews, analyze concepts, and evaluate cost effectiveness of the component/assembly designs- Manages assigned resources for R&D activities, assigns tasks to team members, and supervises workload and work allocation within the project team. - Ensures appropriate competencies are developed and acquired within the team to support development of future products and systems- Prepare Plans and ensures an optimal project portfolio for the team. Execute, Plans capacity, people, and resources for R&D projects. Oversees efficient, timely and quality project execution using the most appropriate internal and external resources and partners (e.g. universities, Corporate Research Centers (CRCs))- Partners with Local Business Unit management to ensure appropriate representation of needs within R&D projects. Evaluates local market requirements and innovation and provides feedback to appropriate product, manufacturing, and R&D strategies- Supports the creation of technology and product roadmaps in collaboration with Division Tech manager and Product Management for Service ANSI portfolio. Provides input to leadership regarding technology strategy planning

Qualifications for the role

Bachelor’s degree with 10 plus years in a product design related role (with minimum of 5 years in Electromechanical R&D role) OR master’s degree in engineering discipline with 5 years of hands-on design experienceDemonstrated Expertise in Creo and Windchill usageExceptional analytical, communication and leadership skillsProject planning and oversite experience managementDemonstrated presentation/influence skillsInterested in leading and developing a team of engineersExperience in Electrical products like Medium Voltage Circuit Breakers, Low Voltage and Medium Voltage ANSI / IEC Switchboard / Switchgear / MCC designExperienced user of Agile development process and toolsANSI standards/UL knowledgeType Testing knowledge at independent labsCreo and Windchill 3D software super user experienceExcellent oral, writing, and documentation skillsStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsTechnical leadership abilityAbility and drive to learn new skills and assume new responsibilitiesKnowledge of circuit breaker design, contactors, instrument transformer, load break switch and operation principles of protection in electrical power systems are desirableAbility to travel is required, estimate up to 20% travelCandidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
