Job Purpose/Overview
The R&D Medical director works with the R&D Medical Head to ensure that R&D initiatives are designed to meet the needs of veterinary clinicians to enable delivery of the best possible medical care of their patients. The R&D Medical Director provides medical insights into R&D projects regarding development of new assays, technology/analyzers, information systems, artificial intelligence initiatives and genetic based assays. This could include assessment of the extent of medical need, likelihood of adoption of the new assays/technology by primary care clinicians or specialists, comparison and contrast with existing assays or technologies and reviewing decision-based software to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes worldwide. The Medical Director will draw on their clinical experience and the experience of colleagues and review of current literature to contribute ideas for project development. A thorough understanding of clinical medicine from both a primary care and specialty care perspective is essential as well as a working knowledge of study design and interpretation of statistical analysis. Communication and collaboration with cross functional teams across the organization is an integral part of this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Support current or planned R&D projects by providing input regarding clinical medical impact of new assays and technology.
Provide insights from current literature, presentations at meetings and specialty college discussion groups to the R&D group.
Familiarity and understanding of diagnostic assays from both reference laboratory and in house laboratory perspectives.
Understand assay study design and significance of statistical analysis.
Familiar with identification and analysis of data relevant to support research as well as support the development of AI.
Effectively communicate results of research initiatives to cross functional teams, including internal and external veterinary clinicians and specialists, sales personnel, and technical support staff
Participate in R&D project planning, from ideation to product launch.
Compose reports, as required, to support R&D initiatives.
Education and Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, equivalent)
Small animal medical residency/fellowship or pathology residency/fellowship
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP)
Minimum of 5 years, post board experience in a clinic or diagnostic setting
Experience and/or training in diagnostic laboratory medicine, assay development, medical device research or another medical research field
Author of manuscripts in peer reviewed veterinary journals
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of veterinary medicine, including both primary care and specialty medicine of small animals
Experience in a clinic or diagnostic laboratory setting, evaluating, and treating or diagnosis of small animal patients, interacting with clients, veterinary technicians, other clinic staff and laboratory technicians/technologists.
Thorough understanding of the use of laboratory assays, including the sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic significance
Familiarity with imaging technologies and their use in patient diagnosis.
Familiarity of AI and its potential medical applications.
Familiarity with interpretation of diagnostic cytology and histopathology reports in patient management
Knowledge of the impact of preanalytical variables on laboratory assays and the frequency with which preanalytical conditions factor into results.
General understanding of assay methodology
General understanding of the function of reference laboratory and in house laboratory analyzers
Experience in study design.
Familiarity with interpretation of the significance of statistical analysis of laboratory data
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Author of manuscripts in peer reviewed veterinary publications
Ability to collaborate with cross functional groups across the organization.
Working Conditions
The associate is regularly required to apply manual dexterity, including hand/wrist flexibility, for computer keyboarding. The associate frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The associate is frequently required to hear and speak in order to use the telephone, make presentations, and communicate with people in an office environment. The associate is occasionally required to sit and stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
The associate will primarily work in a typical office environment including the use of cubicles, computers, and overhead lighting. Temperature extremes will be minimal to nonexistent. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The associate will be required to use a computer, spreadsheets, database management, email, and the Internet. The associate is frequently required to use a calculator, copy machine, and phone system. The associate must occasionally use media equipment such as an overhead projector, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams.
The Target Pay Range for this position is $151,000 - $190,000 annually. At Mars, pay decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, education, training and budget.
