R&D Staff Chemist

TITLE: R&D Staff Chemist

DUTIES:   Generate valid, high-quality, defensible analytical results from analytical and physical testing of raw materials utilized in product manufacturing. Provide timely response for analytical responses (e.g. field failures, product development issues and raw material/manufacturing problems). Effectively communicate analytical results and conclusions. Adhere to safety, quality and housekeeping laboratory guidelines. Resolve raw material and coatings problems through the use of analytical and physical measurement and analysis procedures. Serve as a resource for analytical techniques, polymer characterization and problem solving. Develop new analytical/physical testing methods and procedures or modify existing methods in response to business needs such as innovation, improved characterization and problem solving. Serve as a customer partner with the Product Coatings Group, including automotive and Global Supply Chain. Recommend new chemical testing instrumentation and analytical techniques to support current and future business needs. Work with colleagues, chemists, and interns on instrument operation, analytical methodology and Research and Development. This position requires 5% domestic travel.

SALARY:   $102,900.98/year

LOCATION: The Sherwin-Williams Company, 4440 Warrensville Center Road, Cleveland, OH 44128

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (“STEM”) field and five (5) years of experience required as a Staff Chemist, R&D Research Assistant or related role where required experience gained.    

SPECIAL SKILLS: Also requires experience in the following:

• One (1) year of analytical chemistry experience in an industrial R&D laboratory and/or academic research setting;
• Five (5) years of characterizing reactive chemistry systems (ex. epoxy) to understand structure-property relationships utilizing analytical chemistry and materials science equipment (FT-IR, DSC, TGA, UV/Vis, Raman, and NMR);
• Five (5) years of utilizing analytical equipment to understand polymer/performance attributes for problem solving and optimizing performance including adhesion and mechanical failure for polymer based coatings including reactive or cross-linked systems;
• Three (3) years of characterizing morphology of polymer materials utilizing SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy; and
• Three (3) years of mechanical property testing (DSC and Instron) to understand polymer performance and structure property relationships of 1K (acrylate) and 2K polymer/coating (epoxy) systems and varying crosslinkers and inorganic filler material (pigments, etc.).

Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in 2025. Until then, the role will be based at 4440 Warrensville Center Rd, Warrensville Heights, OH 44128.
