Radiation Physicist, HP2 Job ID 6159 Location SLAC - Menlo Park, CA Full-Time Regular **SLAC Job Postings** **Position overview:** SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory¿s Environmental Health and Safety Division is seeking a Radiation Physicist- level 2 to join our Radiation Physics Group (RPG) team in the Environmental Health and Safety Division. RPG is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing radiological protection programs to protect workers, users, the public and the environment to meet regulatory, and SLAC internal requirements. Members of RPG team are responsible for design of shielding and supporting design of radiation containment systems for the assigned accelerator facilities, experiments, beamlines and projects. Additionally, team members provide support for oversight for their safe and efficient radiological operations. The assigned facilities and projects may include the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), LCLS-II Super Conducting accelerator, FACET-II, Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), LCLS-II High Energy, MEC Upgrade and Cryo Repair and Maintenance Facility (CRMF) projects and/or test facilities. This position reports to the Group Leader, or senior staff in the Radiation Physics Group (RPG) within RPD. Note: SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park; CA. **Your specific responsibilities include:** + Work under minimal supervision to plan, design, manage, and evaluate technical and operational functions of radiation safety programs. Develop radiation safety program procedures and policies and ensure their implementation to meet regulatory, standards and SLAC requirements. + Advise and support technical staff on the design of shielding and engineered radiation safety systems to mitigate radiation hazards by conducting calculations using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo computer code ( e.g. FLUKA, MCNPX, PHITS, MARS), specify requirements for interlocked access control systems, and beam containment systems for assigned SLAC facilities/projects. + Provide support and oversight for commissioning and safe operation for the assigned facilities. + Develop radiation safety program procedures and policies and ensure their implementation to meet regulatory, standards and SLAC requirements. + Provide support and oversight for safe and effective conduct of facility operation and radiological activities in assigned facilities. + Maintain field presence in support of staff and users in implementing radiation protection programs. + Lead and/or participate in radiation measurements to characterize the radiation environment for accelerators, beamlines and experiments. + Develop new techniques, methods, and computer code capabilities to expand and optimize shielding design capabilities. + Work jointly with accelerator and beamline engineers in the design of equipment and shielding to minimize radiation damage and induced activity, and protection against intense FEL beam damage. + Conduct compliance assurance reviews of radiation safety programs.
