Posting Details Working Title Radiation Safety Officer Position Number 00437A Department ENVIRON HEALTH & SAFETY Location Norfolk, VA Type of Position Classified Type of Job Full Time EEO Category C Technicians Job Description This position will serve as the University’s Radiation Safety Officer and ensure the University’s compliance with the regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a Type “A” Broad Scope License and the Virginia Department of Radiological Health. This position will also manage the University’s Laser Safety Program and the shipping of Dangerous Goods. Type of Recruitment Knowledge, skills and abilities A considerable knowledge of health physics and radiological health principles and practices; federal and state regulations to include NRC , OSHA , EPA and DOT as they relate to the control of radioactive material and radiation-producing devices; instrumentation and techniques used to detect and analyze radiation; non-ionizing radiation safety principles and practices and the shipping of international and domestic dangerous goods. Computer literate in word processing, data base, presentation and spreadsheet programs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; interpret and apply state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines; plan and manage own work activities. Special licenses, registration or certification Must possess appropriate qualifications as prescribed in NRC Regulation Guide 10-5 to be approved by the VDH Radiological Health program as an RSO for a Broad Scope License. Must have Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response Training and annual refresher. Must be qualified to wear respiratory protection. Education or training Graduation from a college or university with a degree in radiation science, health physics, environmental science, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, safety engineering, or a related scientific field. Level and type of experience Considerable experience in a radiation protection program that is similar in scope or larger than the University’s, per NRC Guide 10-5. Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification) N/A Conditions of Employment Emergency response for HAZMAT emergencies as needed. Completion of Statement of Personal Economic Interest is required upon hire (for certain classified positions). This position is designated as sensitive. The incumbent will be required to establish and maintain effective work relationships with staff, faculty and students, University officials, and the general public. The qualified candidate must meet training and experience requirements specified by the NRC and VDH for an RSO .
