Radiation Safety Technician or Radiation Safety Technician Senior

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking applicants to fill an opening in the Radiation Safety Program. This position will support the program’s efforts to promote the safe and compliant conduct of research, education, and patient care services across the UVA community utilizing radioactive materials. The position will be filled as either a Radiation Safety Technician or Radiation Safety Technician Senior level based upon the individual’s knowledge, expertise and experience. 

This position will work under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer and/or the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer and will be responsible for implementing integral programs that support the dynamic research and operations of The University of Virginia and The University of Virginia Medical Center.

The Radiation Safety Program’s primary objective is to ensure that operations involving radioactive materials are conducted according to policies and procedures designed to adequately protect public health and safety and maintain exposures as low as reasonably achievable. Regulatory compliance and consultation on the safe use of radioactive materials and analytical radiation producing equipment are key components of the program. The Radiation Safety Program strives to be responsive to the needs of the University and individual users.

The ideal candidate will work well independently and in a team environment, be detail oriented, able to balance multiple projects concurrently, be highly reliable, and have the ability to communicate and act professionally with all members of the University community. Position duties include:

Perform radioactive material receipt surveys and associated database entry for radioactive material received. 

Delivery of radioactive material.

Use of UVA EHS fleet vehicles to perform assigned duties.

Collection and processing of radioactive waste.

Perform inspections of radioactive material users and determine whether they comply with Virginia Department of Health (VDH) regulations and UVA policies and procedures.

Provide onsite training in instances where laboratories are in noncompliance with the regulations.

Count survey swipes, analyze results and remediate contamination problems based upon the swipe results.

Assist in sampling, counting and analyzing of bulk radioactive liquid waste.

Perform liquid radioactive waste disposal.

Maintain a clean and orderly radioactive material storage area and perform safety inspections.

Assist in meetings and/or training.

Assist in maintaining radiation safety documents for compliance with VDH regulations.

Perform other duties as prescribed by supervisor(s).

Physical Demands:  This position involves active and sedentary tasks. Active tasks during fieldwork include frequent standing, bending, crouching, reaching, occasional ladder climbing, moderate lifting, carrying, and manipulating survey equipment and walking for extended periods as a part of inspections and consultations.  Must be able to wear a tight-fitting respirator as required.

Working Environment: This position requires entering offices, research laboratories, outdoor facilities, vivaria, clinical and patient care areas, construction sites, other areas where hazardous materials, loud noise, non-ionizing energy fields and potentially harmful equipment may exist. This position will be required to use radiation safety equipment to perform their assigned duties in these locations.

Required Computer Applications: Competent in Microsoft Office Suite applications, utilizing spreadsheets and databases for data tracking and analysis, and experience with online research for the identification of technical resources. Preferred knowledge of EHSA database use.

Anticipated Hiring Salary:

Radiation Technician: Up to $25/hour ($52,000.00 per annum) commensurate with candidate’s education and experience. This is a non-exempt position with full UVA benefits.

Radiation Technician Senior: Up to $29.33/hour ($61,000.00 per annum) commensurate with candidate’s education and experience. This is a non-exempt position with full UVA benefits.

Minimum Requirements, Radiation Safety Technician:

Education Associate’s degree in the physics or science field; or high school diploma

Experience: 2 years’ work experience with radiation safety.

License: Valid driver’s license with zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience

Vaccination: A pre-employment health screening is required. This position requires compliance with UVA Health OCH-002 policy.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Familiarity with the safety requirements of ionizing radiation.

Familiarity with a radiation safety program environment.

Familiarity with the definitions and meanings of ionizing radiation units and descriptions.

Familiarity with the use of radiation survey meters.

Ability to work in a team environment as a collaborative, professional and respectful team member.

Possess confidence in interpersonal communication including effective verbal and written skills and providing presentations/training for diverse audiences.

Ability to analyze data and present findings to stakeholders across the institution.

Ability to occasionally work after normal business hours and on weekends to align with scheduled activities.

Ability to meet all physical requirements of the position including moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing, sitting and walking for extended periods of time; and

Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including a respirator.

Preferred Education:  Associate degree in the physics or science field.

Preferred Experience: Up to four years of experience working in a radiation safety program.

Preferred Certification:  National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT).

Minimum Requirements, Radiation Safety Technician Senior:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in the physics or science field; or Associate’s degree in the physics or science field.

Experience:  4 year’s work experience with radiation safety; or high school diploma with 6 year’s work experience with radiation safety.

License: Valid driver’s license with zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience.

Vaccination: A pre-employment health screening is required. This position requires compliance with UVA Health OCH-002 policy.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Experience with the safety requirements of ionizing radiation.

Experience with a radiation safety program environment.

Advanced knowledge with the definitions and meanings of ionizing radiation units and descriptions.

Expertise with the use of radiation survey meters:

Ability to work in a team environment as a collaborative, professional and respectful team member.

Possess confidence in interpersonal communication including effective verbal and written skills and providing presentations/training for diverse audiences.

Ability to mentor, supervise and lead other Radiation Safety team members.

Ability to analyze data and present findings to stakeholders across the institution.

Ability to meet all physical requirements of the position including moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing, sitting and walking for extended periods of time.

Able to balance and prioritize multiple projects at a time, be highly reliable, flexible, and service oriented.

Be motivated to take initiative in accomplishing work responsibilities both independently and as a collaborative, professional and respectful EHS team member.

Ability to work a schedule that may include on-call responsibilities to cover holiday, weekend and after-hour response; and

Ability to complete job duties and responsibilities while wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), including a respirator.

Preferred Certification:  National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT).

Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in the physics or science field.

Preferred Experience: Up to four years of experience working in a radiation safety program.
