Position Summary:
The radiation therapy technologist uses ionizing radiation producing equipment to administer therapeutic doses of radiation as prescribed by the physician for treatment of disease. Also assist with the simulation and planning of radiation therapy treatments.
Education, License & Cert:
High school with additional skills training (certification). Two years and one year radiation therapy. Certification required; Type: ARRT (Radiation Technologist)
Experience:
Minimum of six months
Essential Functions:
1. Plans, simulates, and delivers the prescribed course of radiation. 2. Checks beam direction devices, protective devices, heavy and dangerous equipment and keeps records of same under supervision of physicist. 3. Performs daily warm up and quality assurance procedures on linear accelerators, reporting and deviation to the physicist. 4. Assist in high dose rate after loading procedures. 5. Schedule treatment appointment times and SIM check in EMR and submit charge tickets 6. Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient identification. 7. Checks daily treatment time and delivers prescribed dose and maintains daily records 8. Maintains visual and/or audible communication with the patient during treatment and simulation. 9. Identifies changes in patient’s treatment set up and reports to physician and/or physicist, when Necessary and reports any erratic operation of equipment to physicist 10. Application of permanent and temporary markings. 11. Observe the clinical progress of the patient undergoing radiation therapy, observe the first signs of any complication and determine when treatments should be withheld until a physician may be consulted. 12. Sets up simulator room for procedure (catheters, dummies, tape, orthogonal box); takes localization films; assists in treatment. 13. Explains procedure to patients, means of communication during treatment and procedure to follow if emergency arises during treatment. 14. Maintains and documents accurately in the radiation therapy records as well as quality measures. 15. Records statistical data, i.e., weekly, monthly stats 16. Apply the rules and regulations for radiation safety, detect any radiation hazards and provide for appropriate public safety in the event of a radiation accident.
