Radiology Technologists use x-ray equipment to obtain images of the body interpreted by a Radiologist and are responsible for preparing patients for the exam, moving and instructing the patient into the proper position, correctly operating the equipment, and obtaining a high-quality image while minimizing radiation dose to the patient. Radiology Technologists may go on to specialize in more specific imaging techniques such as bone densitometry, cardiovascular-interventional radiography, computer tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine.
A caregiver in this position works 8:00am – 4:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform a variety of technical procedures applying ionizing radiation to detect pathology. Procedures may include routine radiology examinations, motion-free exams, portable/bedside examinations, fluoroscopy and invasive exams, OR and ED procedures and bone density procedures (DEXA).
Regulate and operate equipment.
Review prep information with patients, explain the procedure and obtain written consent.
Document pertinent clinical patient information, such as medical history and allergies.
Demonstrate a calm and understanding approach to ease any fear or anxiety.
Transport patients to and from the department/their room and contact nurses about patients who are connected to devices or monitors.
Interact, communicate and collaborate with nursing caregivers to obtain signed consent forms, assist with exams and prep and determine the length of time the patient will be in the department.
Check written orders from physicians before the procedure and document in the chart after the procedure.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate of an accredited radiology program.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).
Florida licensed as a General Radiographer (RAD).
Knowledge of federal and state regulatories.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Two years of experience as an Imaging Technologist in an acute care imaging setting.
