Rail Service Specialist

JOB SUMMARY: The Rail Service Specialist is responsible for managing and monitoring intermodal rail shipments across North America. This role is critical in ensuring seamless coordination between railroads, internal teams, and customers, while proactively resolving transit issues and driving operational efficiency.  The Rail Service Specialist will collaborate with key rail partners, analyze rail schedules, and communicate service updates to enhance performance, customer satisfaction and overall supply chain reliability.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

 

Monitor and manage intermodal rail shipments across North America, ensuring efficient transit coordination between major rail corridors. Build and maintain strategic relationships with Class I railroads like Union Pacific to ensure proactive communication of delays or disruptions. Analyze rail schedule changes and identify customer impacts, communicating updates and adjustments to Account Management. Provide reports detailing shipments affected by service disruptions, along with real-time updates for delays extending beyond initial estimates. Create and distribute rail service communications that highlight strategic initiatives, operational updates, and performance improvements for marketing to customers. Conduct in-depth rail corridor service analysis to identify opportunities for transit adjustments and operational efficiencies. Oversee gate reservation assignments to ensure strategic decision-making and resource allocation. Monitor and assess rail service updates and notifications to identify significant performance impacts and ensure timely resolutions. Lead problem resolution initiatives, enhancing customer satisfaction by delivering strategic and timely solutions tailored to client needs. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor’s degree is preferred, but not required, in Business, Transportation, Logistics or Supply Chain. Two or more years of operations experience with intermodal transportation and railroad operations is preferred. Data analytics experience is a plus. Experience with SQL, forecast modeling, and advanced knowledge of MS Excel is preferred. Must have excellent communications skills - interpersonal, verbal, written, and be able to interact well with our customers and vendors. Organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to establish and prioritize workload in order to meet team and company goals using good business judgment. Must be able to lead and manage competing priorities by multi-tasking and meeting all deadlines and flexibility with continually changing priorities while providing high quality customer service.

Ability to manage multiple priorities as well as flexibility to adapt to change with new systems and methods while working in a team environment.
