The West Sacramento Parks and Recreation Department consists of four separate functions: a Parks Division, Recreation Division, Early Learning Services and Tree Program. The Recreation Coordinator positions reports to the Recreation Supervisor for Adult and Youth Sports and will serve a key role in providing high-quality athletic programs that promote health, wellness, and community engagement among adults in our region. The City of West Sacramento Parks & Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Recreation Coordinator for Adult Sports to lead, manage, and grow our adult sports programs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Plan, organize, and manage a diverse range of adult sports leagues, tournaments, and drop-in programs, including but not limited to basketball, softball, flag football, volleyball, and pickleball.
• Oversee the recruitment, training, and supervision of coaches, officials, and volunteers to ensure high program standards.
• Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for participants of varying skill levels.
• Collaborate with facility management teams to ensure well-maintained, safe, and appropriate usage of sports venues.
• Develop innovative marketing and promotional strategies to grow program participation and community awareness, including social media, newsletters, and outreach events.
• Monitor program budgets, registration fees, and other financial aspects to ensure cost-effectiveness while maintaining a high level of service.
• Evaluate program success through participant feedback and data analysis and implement improvements to enhance participant experience.
* This position will require you to work primarily Sunday-Thursday, with a combination of shifts during the day and evenings.
Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and leadership skills, a passion for sports and recreation, and experience managing programs that enhance community engagement and healthy lifestyles. They should be adept at multitasking, handling challenges with a positive attitude, and building collaborative relationships with staff, participants, and the public. Prior experience in recreation programming, especially in adult sports, is highly preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:
1. Experience in Adult Sports Programming: Proven ability to organize, manage, and grow adult sports leagues, tournaments, and special events in a recreation or municipal setting, particularly within a Parks & Recreation department. Experience should include managing sports such as basketball, softball, volleyball, flag football, and emerging sports like pickleball.
2. Knowledge of Recreation Facility Operations: A strong understanding of managing recreational facilities, including coordinating with maintenance staff, optimizing scheduling, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.
3. Proven Leadership and Staff Management Skills: Demonstrated success in recruiting, training, and supervising part-time staff, coaches, and volunteers to deliver high-quality sports programs. Ability to lead diverse teams effectively.
4. Strong Community Engagement and Customer Service: Track record of working collaboratively with the community, participants, and other stakeholders to create inclusive and accessible sports programs. Candidates should excel in building relationships with both internal and external partners, ensuring participant satisfaction.
5. Marketing and Outreach Expertise: Experience developing and executing promotional strategies, utilizing social media, newsletters, and other marketing tools to drive program awareness and increase participation.
6. Budget and Resource Management: Proven capability in managing program budgets, optimizing resources, and finding creative solutions to financial or logistical challenges.
7. Passion for Recreation and Wellness: A demonstrated commitment to promoting the benefits of active recreation, community health, and wellness through adult sports programming.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: High school diploma or equivalent and an AA/AS from an accredited college, with major coursework in recreation or a related field. Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible related experience. Supervisory experience preferred. Additional qualifying experience can substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Possession of a valid Class "3" or "C" California driver's license; and current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Multi-Media and/or Standard First Aid certificates prior to placement at worksite. Depending upon assignment, may be required to obtain a Class "2" or "B" California driver's license within thirty (30) days of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work in an office or field environment; walking, standing, running, sitting for periods of time; some stooping, bending, and climbing; dealing with the public.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Works a variety of shifts, weekends, and holidays.

An applicant who qualifies for veterans’ preference and successfully places on an eligibility list for initial entrance into employment with the city shall be advanced one rank on the final eligibility list. Where there are five (5) or less qualified applicants, no veterans’ preference shall apply and all applicants shall be placed on the certification list forwarded to the departments for hiring consideration.
