Position Overview:

 

The Recreation Specialist engages people with mental illness and / or substance use and assists them in meeting the demands of community living by teaching them the necessary skills through a planned program of social, recreational and personal development activities designed to support their recovery, independence and self-determination, and enhance overall well-being and quality of life.

 

Job Functions:

 

•Work independently in the field and as a member of a team to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents receiving services

•Search for, integrate, and act as liaison to, appropriate and available community resources and recreational, social and personal development opportunities for residents and consumers of SUS housing and services

•Participate in meetings as assigned including supervisory and service planning meetings

•Facilitate resident empowerment committees/activities

•Adhere diligently to all life-safety policies and procedures

•Perform all duties in a manner that is appreciative of residents’ strengths and supportive of their continued recovery

• Create, and link residents/consumers to appropriate social, recreational and personal development opportunities

•Engage residents in expressing recreational, social and personal development preferences

•Develop monthly recreation schedule in consultation with Program Director

•Enlist residents’ participation in creating and finding recreational, social and personal development opportunities

•Facilitate and coordinate residents’ access to (including transportation), and inclusion in, recreational, social and personal development opportunities both within, and external to, SUS

•Teach residents the skills that will permit them maximum benefit from participation in the recreational, social, and personal development opportunities of their choice.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

High School Diploma required, Associate’s Degree in related field preferredMinimum one year of experience working with individuals with mental illness, substance use issues and/or a history of homelessness, or previous experience working with individuals in these groups in the capacity of recreational therapy preferred.Computer literate in Word processing and email Company Overview
