RECREATIONAL THERAPIST
JOB DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: Clinical REPORTS TO: Clinical Director
PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The purpose of the Recreational Therapy process is to improve or maintain physical, cognitive, social, emotional and spiritual functioning in order to facilitate full participation in life.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Obtain information from medical records, medical staff, family members or patients themselves to assess patient capabilities, needs and interests.
Plan, organize, direct, and participate in treatment programs and activities to facilitate patient rehabilitation.
Plan and implement expressive therapy, leisure, and social activities for patients to ensure that their needs are addressed.
Conduct sessions to improve patient mental and physical well-being, instruct patients in activities and techniques, such are sports, dance, music, art, or relaxation techniques designed to meet their specific needs.
Assess patient needs through observations, medical records, tests and discussions with other healthcare professionals, patient family and patient.
Create treatment plans and programs that meet patient needs and interests.
Plan and implement interventions to prevent harm to a patient.
Engage patient’s treatment services and recreation activities using a variety of techniques including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, and music.
Provide interventions that focus on treating and helping maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their clients by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety.
Communication:
Uses language that is easily understood and appropriate for the specific situation. Demonstrates customer service behaviors when interacting with patients, team members and guests. Communicates patient information in a concise, accurate, timely, and confidential manner. Utilizes available resources to assist with communication needs Ensures that accurate information is communicated in a timely and effective manner throughout the hospital. Maintains a collaborative relationship with other departments.
Professional Image and Behavior:
Adheres to the department hospital code standards. Focuses on the needs of the patients and family. Avoids discussion of personal issues and/or complaints in the presence of the patient. Assumes responsibility for behaviors and actions; accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner. Participates in opportunities to promote professional growth.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.
This position may require weekend availability.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy required. Previous experience in recreation in a healthcare setting is preferred.
LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or currently in the process of obtaining national certification.
First Aid, CPR, de-escalation, and restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
