Recreational Therapist III

The state operated Veterans Home at Chelsea is an independent state agency consisting of long-term care and a domiciliary which are independent living quarters for our veterans.The care and services provided by the Veterans Homes are supported by an extraordinary group of staff working to meet the needs of our veterans. The ideal incumbent's role as the Recreation Therapist Supervisor will be to collaborate with staff in developing therapeutic objectives and goals to meet the needs of veteran residents.

DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborates on development of individual and/or group therapeutic activities to develop social skills.Plans and organizes recreational, social and instructional individual and group activities for residents based on recreational needs and interests.Participates in staff interdisciplinary and developmental team meetings.Prepare reports and summaries of recreational activities programs and results.Motivates residents to participate in recreation activities for those functioning at various levels of impairment.Motivates residents to participate in recreation activities for those functioning at various levels of impairment.Completes employee performance review (EPRS) for direct reporting staff.Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:

Knowledge of motivational and reinforcement techniques.Knowledge of the principals and techniques of therapeutic recreation.Knowledge of the factors, trends, and problems in providing recreation services to special client groups, such as the mentally or physically handicapped, aged, etc. Knowledge of the principals and techniques of adapted physical education.Knowledge of types and uses of materials and equipment used in recreational activities.Knowledge of methods and techniques of counseling as applied to therapeutic activities.Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress.Ability to prepare general reports.Ability to plan and conduct training and instruction.Ability to give clear oral instruction.Ability to exercise leadership in group situations.Ability to establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON THE JOB:

Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Knowledge of the types and availability of public and private organizations and sources for providing recreation services.Knowledge of first aid techniques.Knowledge of methods and techniques of curriculum development for therapeutic recreation activities.

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time technical or professional experience in planning, organizing, instituting or conducting therapeutic services in a recognized public or private agency, and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, and (C) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience. II. A Master's or higher degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. NOTE: Substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience. Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
