POSITION SUMMARY
Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Process Controls Supervisor to support its Galveston Bay Refinery located in Texas City, TX. This position supervises and provides technical direction for Process Control & Automation team of engineering and technical support. Primary duties of the Process Control Supervisor include administrative, work prioritization, technical review, long range department planning, technology evaluation, employee development and corporate knowledge sharing. This reports directly to the Technical Services Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide leadership and technical direction for refinery’s Process Control Group (PCG), composed of process control engineers and control system specialists. Lead with empathy, helping the group achieve its goals by aligning the group with the refinery area teams.
Set clear expectations for process control group members. Have meaningful discussions with employees regarding their performance and career, providing coaching and recognition on a regular basis.
Attract, retain, and mentor top technical resources to ensure the highest possible performance of PCG.
Support MPC's culture by providing a clear vision of team direction and how each employee contributes to the vision. Provide opportunities that promote employee development. Support changes in the organization and business.
Develop and implement work processes that ensure reliable and safe process control activities for the refinery.
Ensure group meets target dates and requirements when addressing compliance associated tasks including Process Safety PSM action items, assigned training, PHA participation and specialized certifications.
Review work product and ensure it follows applicable standards, templates, and best practices. Conduct periodic group meetings to facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices.
Balance individual workloads and prioritize individual assignments, working closely with the Area Team Leaders. Provide resources for temporary assignments, assess staffing requirements, and participate in the hiring process.
Develop and manage the Process Control department CAPEX budget.
Provide process control resources to turnarounds and major engineering projects as necessary. Develop process control scope for refinery turnarounds.
Support refinery programs and initiatives. Ensures unit’s objectives align with refinery’s targets for safety, regulatory compliance, reliability and efficiency.
Guides team in workplace performance and to ensure PC&A issues are solved timely and measures taken to prevent reoccurrence.
Participate in the Controls Advisory Group (CAG).
Maintain the process control system life cycle plan. Initiate capital projects necessary to prevent system obsolescence.
Evaluate and select process control vendors and contractors who can provide support to the refinery control systems and process control projects.
Maintain a control system monitoring program to ensure system reliability and effectiveness of control.
Collaborates with various departments to ensure unit control is stable to include, at least, applying and adjusting appropriate tuning constants, evaluating and managing regulatory controls loops, complex control loops, advanced process control, SIS, and alarm management.
Ensures incorporation of process safety and risk management principles, compliance to process safety management program, processes and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum (Required) Qualifications
Bachelor's degree is required. Chemical, Electrical Engineering, or related field is preferred. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
Five years' experience in process engineering and/or process control engineering.
Strong initiative, leadership, collaboration, and strategic / critical thinking skills are essential.
Experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Advanced Process Control (APC).
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Able to work off-hour duties such as plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in refining or petrochemical industry.
Previous supervisory experience.
Proficiency and familiarity with Honeywell Experion (with C300 and HPM controllers), Honeywell Profit Suite (including PBM Profit and Blending Applications), Aspen Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC), Triconex, Allen Bradley and Modicon PLC, and Emerson DeltaV.
