Refrigeration Technician 1

A Refrigeration Technician 1, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities is an entry-level position responsible for assisting with the maintenance, repair, and installation of refrigeration systems in a variety of settings, such as commercial buildings, industrial facilities, or residential homes. They work under the supervision of experienced technicians, learning and practicing refrigeration techniques. Refrigeration Technician 1s play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and reliable operation of refrigeration systems. 

Essential Functions/Qualifications  

The responsibilities of the position include the following:  

Oversee and manage Refrigeration, Electrical, and HVAC systems including monitoring and trending, troubleshooting and repairs (Compressors, condensers, fans, heating, cooling, contactors, motors, microprocessors, frequency drives).  Execute preventive maintenance PMs within established timelines (Oil analysis, filter changes, calibration of sensors and transducers, compressor alignment checks/adjustments.  Ensure proper leak detection system function, conduct required inspections and reporting, evaluate, and implement energy management strategies.  Ensure product integrity is maintained through temperature monitoring and control; evaluate and report on equipment condition.  Demonstrate clear and concise communication with Management. Responsible for daily communication of all pertinent information regarding system operation and maintenance to departmental management and maintenance teams.  Responsible for housekeeping and cleanup of refrigeration machine rooms, refrigeration maintenance areas, and all project areas daily. Must be able to interpret and understand plans and specifications, schematics, operating and maintenance manuals for systems being managed.  Operate power hand tools and other specialized electrical equipment.  Install, repair, and service specialized electrical equipment and machinery as needed.  Read electrical circuit diagrams.  Maintain a list of assigned and self-generated tasks in the form of a written To Do list.  Work in a safe manner and take action to correct or report safety hazards.  Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Refrigeration Basics: Understanding of basic refrigeration principles, such as the refrigeration cycle and components. Equipment Maintenance: Proficiency in performing routine maintenance tasks on refrigeration equipment, including cleaning, oil changes, and filter replacements. Troubleshooting: Basic troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve common refrigeration issues. Safety Practices: Adherence to safety regulations and procedures to prevent accidents and injuries. Tools and Equipment: Proficiency in using basic hand tools and diagnostic equipment. Data Collection: Accurate recording of equipment data and maintenance activities. 

Interpersonal  

Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with other technicians and team members. Communication: Clear and effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, and customers. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments and priorities. Problem-Solving: Basic problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot minor equipment issues. Dependability: Reliability and consistency in performing duties and responsibilities. 

Education and Experience  

At least 2 years of ammonia systems experience, RETA CIRO certifications or equivalent.  Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates, interpret electrical specifications, and implement work orders.  Job requires strong analytical skills to resolve plant system issues including primary and control wiring, processing equipment and refrigeration systems, etc. in an expedient, safe and proper manner.  

Work Environment and Schedule   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at one of our Alaska processing facilities, and the ability to travel, including at times in remote locations.      

Physical Demands   

This role must be capable of working consecutive, long and variable work shifts for extended periods of time. Shifts typically range from 12 to 16 hours per day with periodic breaks depending on work demands. The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration and with the vessel operating under all types of weather conditions including extreme cold. This means standing, walking and maintaining balance in rough seas or other types of weather.  

Both hands must be capable of grabbing, holding or gripping rope, rails, equipment and vessel structures for frequent periods of time. Forceful grasping along with repetitive finger and hand use is occasional.  Applicants must be able to climb up and down, safely ascend and descend ladders, work in small and confined spaces, and pass all safety test requirements.
