Refrigeration Technician 3

As the Refrigeration Technician 3, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities, this role is a highly skilled technician responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of complex refrigeration systems in various settings, such as commercial buildings, industrial facilities, or large-scale refrigeration plants. They work independently, diagnosing and troubleshooting complex refrigeration issues and providing technical expertise to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of refrigeration systems. Refrigeration Technician 3s often lead or supervise teams of technicians and may be involved in project management and system design. 

Essential Functions/Qualifications  

The responsibilities of the position include the following:  

Oversee and manage Refrigeration, Electrical, and HVAC systems including monitoring and trending, troubleshooting and repairs (Compressors, condensers, fans, heating, cooling, contactors, motors, microprocessors, frequency drives.  Administer in conducting preventive maintenance PMs within established timelines (Oil analysis, filter changes, calibration of sensors and transducers, compressor alignment checks/adjustments.  Ensure regular leak detection, conducting required inspections and reporting, evaluating and implementing energy management strategies.  Ensure product integrity is maintained through temperature monitoring and control, evaluating and reporting equipment condition.  Clear and concise communication with Management.  Responsible for logging time and materials into computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) in the form of work orders and PM’s.  Responsible for daily communication of all pertinent information regarding system operation and maintenance to departmental management and maintenance teams.  Responsible for housekeeping and cleanup of refrigeration machine rooms, refrigeration maintenance areas, and all project areas daily.  Required to interpret and understand plans and specifications, schematics, operating and maintenance manuals for systems being overseen.  Help and training lower-level operators.  This position will also assist the building and material handling equipment maintenance teams when needed. Duties will include assisting in general building repairs, electrical troubleshooting and repairs and other general maintenance activities. Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.  Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Advanced Refrigeration Knowledge: In-depth understanding of refrigeration theory, principles, and components. Complex System Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex refrigeration systems, including those with multiple stages or specialized equipment. Installation and Design: Experience in installing and designing refrigeration systems, including layout, component selection, and piping. Project Management: Ability to manage refrigeration projects, including planning, scheduling, and budgeting. Supervisory Skills: Experience leading and mentoring a team of technicians. Safety Regulations: Adherence to safety regulations and procedures, including EPA Section 608 compliance. Technical Documentation: Ability to prepare technical documentation, such as system diagrams, maintenance records, and reports. 

Interpersonal  

Leadership: Strong leadership skills to guide and motivate a team of technicians. Communication: Effective communication with customers, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders. Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and solve complex refrigeration problems. Decision-Making: Making sound and timely decisions regarding refrigeration system maintenance and repair. Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing technologies and industry standards. Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service and building positive relationships with clients. 

Education and Experience  

Certified in Refrigeration/Electrical, Trade School Certification, or Equivalent. RETA CIRO, CRST and CRES Certifications Required.  Knowledge of Ammonia Refrigeration & CFC Certification.  knowledgeable in HVACR.  5 years’ experience in Refrigeration/Electrical/HVAC. Must be willing and able to obtain OSHA HAZMAT 24-hour training within 90 days of employment. 

Work Environment and Schedule   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at one of our Alaska processing facilities, and the ability to travel, including at times in remote locations.      

Physical Demands   

The Chief Engineer must be capable of working consecutive, long and variable work shifts for extended periods of time. Shifts typically range from 12 to 16 hours per day with periodic breaks depending on work demands. The work is strenuous and sometimes hazardous due to exposure to operating machinery, mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, pressurized fluids, vibration and with the vessel operating under all types of weather conditions including extreme cold. This means standing, walking and maintaining balance in rough seas or other types of weather.  

Both hands must be capable of grabbing, holding or gripping rope, rails, equipment and vessel structures for frequent periods of time. Forceful grasping along with repetitive finger and hand use is occasional.  Applicants must be able to climb up and down, safely ascend and descend ladders, work in small and confined spaces, and pass all safety test requirements.
