Description
Performs all instructional and other requirements in the Refuse Collector Apprentice Program. Collects waste from residential property according to an assigned route. Maintains and monitors the truck for any necessary repairs.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Acquires knowledge and acclimation necessary to become a Refuse Collector, Senior by obtaining a Commercial Driver's License. Attends classroom instruction, taking notes, contributing to discussion, taking academic tests, and participating in practical exercises.
+ Collects and disposes of waste by operating an automated truck, using the truck to pick up ninety gallon garbage cans, furniture, tree limbs, etc. from the curb, replacing damaged trash cans as needed, and traveling to the transfer station to empty the truck. Lifts boxes, bags of yard waste, furniture, tree limbs, etc. into collection truck; places waste, furniture and other refuse into collection trucks.
+ Interacts with citizens and customers by explaining waste collection codes and procedures.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
No experience required.
Additional Information & Requirements
Valid Driver’s License with NO Negative points on their record. Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments.
Work Hours: Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm 40 hrs. / week

+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
