Description
The City of Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation Landscape Division is seeking an experienced Refuse Truck Operator. This position works with a team to maintain city streets and p erform landscaping duties which include removing trees, mowing ditch banks, performing mechanized beach-cleaning, and hauling nursery stock.

Department Hiring Salary Range: $41,503 - $43,578
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Operates heavy equipment to include Surf Rakes (clean beaches), backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, and maintainers.
+ Maintains grounds and right of ways by collecting and delivering trash containers, mowing grass, raking leaves, digging holes, planting, pruning and maintaining trees and flower beds, mixing and applying chemicals, loading and applying mulch, weed eating, trimming, performing general care of landscape, grading athletic fields for game play, installing and maintaining turf, removing trees, grinding tree stumps, identifying plants and trees, cleaning up job sites, hauling topsoil, grading, removing snow, aerating lawns, cutting grass, trimming trees, removing dead limbs, removing storm damage, cutting back weeds, picking up and removing litter, refuse and debris from vacant lots.
+ This position also operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, forklifts, and other motorized equipment in grounds maintenance operations.
+ Performs safety checks and minor preventative maintenance on equipment, including but not limited to, checking fluids, changing blades and daily inspections to ensure equipment is safe to operate.
+ Performs landscaping duties by preparing soil, digging holes, loading and distributing mulch, cleaning up job sites, grinding tree stumps, trimming trees and shrubs, removing flowers, installing turf, fertilizing, applying pesticides, planting trees, shrubs and flowers, seeding and lining mulching beds and trees, hauling topsoil, grading, removing snow, aerating lawns, hauling and removing trash, grading and smoothing clay on ball fields, lining fields, raising base pins, raking fields and preparing sport and recreational fields for use.
+ Responds to emergencies by removing ice, snow, and storm debris.
+ Other duties as assigned
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Two years' experience as an Equipment Operator or successful completion of a City apprenticeship program.
Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):
CDL Class B with Air Brakes Endorsement within 6 months of employment

Additional Information & Requirements
Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509
Work Hours: Monday -Friday, 6:30AM to 3:00PM, 40 hours per week
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
