Reg Nurse First Assistant

The Surgical Team at the Hamilton General Hospital provides peri-operative care to a critical and acute adult patient population. In this exciting and dynamic environment, our team supports tertiary and regional programs providing both inpatient and same day surgery and is the host hospital for the Regional Cancer Centre.

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) provides the Department of Neuro Surgery, with a perioperative nurse in an expanded role, capable of acting as a first assistant in a variety of surgical procedures. The RNFA provides direct care to patients using the nursing process preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively. The RNFA functions interdependently with the surgeon and applies the knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient.The RNFA provides leadership and excellence in Perioperative nursing care for the surgical patient and family through the components of: expert clinical practice, consultation, specialized education and leadership.The RNFA demonstrates the ability to provide surgical assistance with safe and adequate visualization of the surgical field by using:• Appropriate retraction devices, for example: self-retaining, hand-held, manual.• Suctioning devices• Grasping instruments; etc.The RNFA participates in continuing education programs to maintain and enhance clinical competencies related to both perioperative nursing and RNFA practice.
