NJCAA Region 2 Commissioner

Definition of Region

National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 2 is composed of two-year community colleges throughout Arkansas and Oklahoma.  The Region has a rich history of athletic and academic excellence with numerous championships and recognitions at the District and National levels. 

Member institutions are:  Arkansas State University Mid-South, Arkansas State University – Mountain Home, Arkansas State University – Newport, Arkansas, Arkansas State University – Three Rivers, Carl Albert State College, Connors State College, Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, Eastern Oklahoma State College, Murray State College, National Park College, North Arkansas College, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Northern Oklahoma State College, NorthWest Arkansas Community College, Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas, Redlands Community College, Rose State College, Seminole State College, Shorter College, South Arkansas College, Southeast Arkansas College, Southern Arkansas University Tech, University of Arkansas – Rich Mountain, and Western Oklahoma State College.

These schools compete in 17 sports (some in both men’s and women’s) at the Division 1 and Division 2 levels of the Region.  Sports include:  baseball, softball, cross country, wrestling, soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, golf, track, and tennis.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Commissioner for Region 2 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) will oversee a number of responsibilities throughout the year. Among these duties will be the oversight of national rankings, All-American selections, postseason seeding and at-large selections, and national championship obligations.

The Commissioner will ultimately report to the NJCAA Region 2 Council of Chancellors and Presidents, with day-to-day supervision provided to the Council’s Executive Committee.

The Commissioner shall have the powers necessary for the effective performance of his/her duties.

Specific responsibilities include:

Serve as spokesperson for Region 2, unless the Chair of the Council of Chancellors and Presidents performs that function. Serve as an ex-officio member of the Council of Chancellors and Presidents, and Athletics Administrators and all Advisory Groups. This will require the Commissioner to attend all committee meetings and disseminate information to all members. Serve as the official delegate of the Region 2 to the annual NJCAA convention, and also to serve as the official representative of Region 2 at any meeting of Region Commissioners. Serve as financial officer of Region 2, receiving and disbursing Region 2 funds as directed, and maintaining accurate records which will be subject to annual audit. Prepare an annual budget for Region 2. This budget will be submitted to the Council of Chancellors and Presidents in June for review and approval. Schedule, make arrangements, and prepare agendas for meetings of the Council of Chancellors and Presidents, and Athletics Administrators and all Advisory Groups. Ensure compliance by all Region 2 members with all NJCAA and Region 2 regulations and bylaws. This duty will include, but may not be limited to, conducting an annual review of compliance issues with coaching staffs on the campus of each member institution and administering coaches’ certifications. Investigate complaints relative to Region 2 and to settle these per the NJCAA Policy bylaws, and further make inquiries and investigations as deemed necessary. Staff the Region 2 Office subject to the approval of the Region 2 Council of Chancellors and Presidents and supervise any staff. Coordinate the Region 2 awards system. Maintain a current knowledge of NJCAA policies and procedures as well as to maintain current knowledge of the Region 2, Bylaws and Operating Code; coordinate preparation of NJCAA legislation on behalf of Region 2; monitor and review national trends and legislation as they may affect Region 2 and its members. Coordinate the preparation and distribution of all Region 2 mandated sports schedules. Prepare appropriate reports, fulfill requests for information, and disseminate information as necessary to all Region 2 members. Coordinate all Region 2 championships including programs, awards, officials and schedules for competition. The Commissioner will be expected to attend all championship events. Chair all eligibility and infraction meetings. Coordinate the Region 2 directory, handbook and other Region 2 publications. Secure and monitor all athletic eligibility information for each Region 2 member. Oversee the selection, training, assignment and evaluation of all officials for the NJCAA Region 2 sports. Promote Region 2, its championships and post-season exposure with the expressed purpose of generating maximum revenue when and where possible. Perform other such duties as may be assigned by the Chair of the Council of Chancellors and Presidents.

Compensation

Compensation will be provided primarily through contributions from member institutions and will be commensurate with education and experience.  Anticipated salary will be in the range of $75,000 and will also include a benefit package reflective of employees of the member institutions.
