Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Senior Director, Global Product Integrity, the Microbiologist, Innovation and Quality By Design position is primarily responsible for assuring new products and processes destined for sale or implementation, respectively, in North America are designed to be food safe and compliant with food safety regulatory requirements. This includes proactive development, ongoing management and continuous improvement of Food Safety procedures and programs in product and process innovation and development. The incumbent will partner with R&D to develop and deploy training, technology and practices to assure best in class food safety capabilities for McCormick including microbiology, thermal and non-thermal processing, ready to eat foods, product/process validation and commercialization.

Assure Quality and Food Safety by Design of North American (NA) innovation pipeline: In collaboration with PD and Supply Chain, guide formula and process design; develop and execute procedures, documentation and practices to assure effective and efficient design and commercialization of safe and compliant new products prior to launch. Includes review and approval of all formulas, manufacturing processes and packaging; accurate regulatory designation, e.g. acid or acidified food; compliance with Ready To Eat obligations (including labeling); compliance with food safety regulatory requirements e.g. site registration, and; packaging suitability pertaining to food safety.

Training and development of relevant stakeholders: Effective communication and knowledge transfer ensuring safe food and compliance by design principles are understood as well as accurately and consistently implemented. Engages with customers as needed to assure the Taste You Trust pledge.

Provides microbiological support to global businesses, specifically including APZ and Flavor Solutions business (FONA, Brand Aromatics)

Level of Education and Discipline

Ph.D. or M.S. (or globally recognized equivalent) in Microbiology, Food Science, Biology or related field.

Certification and/or Licenses

 

Experience - functional/industry/commercial knowledge, business acumen

- In depth knowledge of manufacturing environments, microbial control strategies and hygienic design

- In depth knowledge of food microbiology, growth and survival characteristics

- Highly skilled in risk assessment, communication and management techniques

- In depth knowledge of thermal processing including conducting or leading validation studies

- Strong track record of successful partnering with Product Development, R&D, Engineering and Operations to embed Quality & Food Safety principles in product and process development.

Interpersonal Skills - leadership, interactions, communication, influence

Dimension

The role will be a key driver and guide for Quality and Food Safety by Design at McCormick.  Establishing ways of working that drive failure prevention focused at point of design.  It will work in close support and collaboration with R&D partners

  

Requires in-depth understanding of plant operations and expert level understanding of food safety and applied microbiology technology. Needs to be current with regulatory and industry requirements; Operating knowledge of regulations specific to country, region, state or locality.

Needs to be able to anticipate and adapt to changes in external environment. Needs to be able to seek innovative solutions and encourages the same in staff and informally influence Plant QA and Operations.

Base Salary: $ 100,870 - 176,480

 

Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience for this role, and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. This position is also eligible to participate in McCormick’s Incentive Bonus (MIB) Plan.
