Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Registered Nurse, Acute Perinatal, provides nursing care to patients in all three areas of Obstetrics to include antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum. This will include maternal, fetal, and newborn assessments, patient teaching, counselling and liaising with support services.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Admits the patient to most appropriate care area by collaborating with the patient, the primary care physician/midwife and other health care providers..
2. Conducts comprehensive assessment of the patient and her fetus or newborn on admission and thereafter, on a regular basis throughout their stay in hospital. Assessment skills can include: abdominal palpation, pelvic examination, monitoring of maternal-fetal-newborn vital signs, fetal cardiotocography including identification of potential risk factors and acuity.
3. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the in-hospital experience in collaboration with the patient, her family and the physician/midwifery team. Refers the patient to additional support services as needed, e.g. dietary, physiotherapy, social services, psychiatry, lactation consultants, and others.
4. Provides emergency care for the woman-fetus-newborn in crisis by transferring to the most appropriate care area. Notifies the patient’s physicians, perinatal clinical educator, program coordinator, and/or program manager if there is need for concern and/or emergency situation.
5. Provides patient teaching and care, focusing on health promotion. This care includes the chemical dependent woman, the physically challenged woman and the woman undergoing termination of pregnancy.
6. Prepares the patient and her family for discharge from hospital, including refering the patient to community health or antepartum home care as necessary for follow-up care and support.
7. Provides guidance or work direction to other staff by acting as a preceptor to new orientees and nursing students.
8. Advances own clinical knowledge base and skill set by attending courses and in-service opportunities as outlined by the employer.
9. Participates in the development and revision of departmental and hospital policies in order to maintain standards for nursing care, in collaboration with the program coordinator, charge nurse and perinatal clinical educator. Participates in the evaluation of those standards by identifying processes/procedures that require improvement.
10. Participates on committees such as imProve, best practice review committees, multidisciplinary and nursing committee as required by attending meetings to enhance and optimize the delivery of care and to facilitate evidence-based nursing practice.
11. Maintains quality assurance and risk management activities by participating in patient surveys, chart audits, case reviews, and other monitoring activities. Reports safety and risk concerns through the Patient Safety Learning System.
12. Supports and participates in research projects through methods such as collecting data, summarizing information, and/or providing verbal updates for review and further analysis by principal researcher/research team.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
• Graduation of an approved School of Nursing, Midwifery certification or the successful completion of the BCIT perinatal compressed time frame course or BCIT perinatal certification plus two (2) years recent related experience in perinatal nursing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Current CPR/Newborn Resuscitation Certification (NRP).
• Breastfeeding update, minimum 6 hours, in the last 2 years.
Skills and Abilities
• Ability to apply maternal-fetal-newborn nursing theory and expertise in the nursing care of obstetrical patients and the newborn.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Ability to be flexible and adapt in a continuously changing environment.
