The Director Surgical Services is accountable for providing leadership and management direction to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services in OR, PACU, Same Day Surgery, GI, Anesthesia Service and Sterile Processing.

The Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of staff, patient, departmental and organizational needs.

The Director ensures alignment with the strategic plan and vision of nursing and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The responsibilities include oversight of the 24-hour accountability of day-to-day operation of the Surgical/Perioperative department, and the presence of long-term planning for surgical services/procedural areas that is consistent with the Magnet principles and the strategic direction of the CNO and City of Hope.

The Director of Surgical Services serves as a role model for professional excellence in the administration and delivery of patient care and is accountable for age groups as defined in the scope of care.

The successful candidate:

Develops and integrates the short- and long-term goals and objective of the department with the goals in alignment with the organization.Ability to navigate the clinical information systems as needed to perform job duties.Maintains patient confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines.Works with the clinical leadership on hospital and department policy development.Manages patient experience and satisfaction initiatives.Appropriately addresses and resolves patient complaints and communicates resolution to patient relations in a timely manner.Effectively handles supervision of direct reports including documentation of personnel records in a timely manner.Oversees all tasks associated with the acquisition of materials and equipment related to the support of surgical services.Effectively handles employee grievances and complaints in accordance with hospital and corporate standards.Development and monitoring operational and capital budgets and justify variances.Manages departmental FTEs and job requisitions.Accountable for strategic planning, coordinating, and evaluating surgical services and care in collaboration with the surgical leadership and senior nursing leadership.Creates and maintains utilization statistics and reporting for department planning.Monitors and oversees all departmental activity to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies including state, federal, and Joint Commission.Responsible for department’s quality outcomes and patient satisfaction.Coordinates staff meetings and cultivates team spirit and departmental pride by recognizing employee accomplishments and providing an atmosphere of open communication.In collaboration with the Chief of Surgery, Chief of Anesthesia and Medical Director of GI Services participates and reports department specific information to appropriate hospital committees.Works with the surgeons/physician/anesthesia leadership to develop service line goals and new business opportunities.Facilitates communication and collaboration between administration and Anesthesia Department faculty.Optimizes surgical department operations by managing block utilization.Able to identify critical departmental issues and effectively communicate those issues to supervisor and/or administration when appropriate.Responds to and investigates variance reports involving perioperative department or processes with the surgical services manager in a timely manner.Participate in developing practices and processes that represent best practice standards across the enterprise.Oversees orientation and continuing education to direct report and stakeholders in the department.Appropriately recommends enough qualified and competent persons to provide care/service in the surgical department and assures the qualifications and competence of those staff members (who are not licensed independent practitioners).Represents department on the director level of assigned committees and meetings.Effectively handles supervision of direct reports including documentation of personnel records in a timely manner.Projects and maintains positive working relationships by consistently displaying a caring and professional demeanor with his/her public and staff (peers, subordinates, supervisor’s physicians, patients, and others.) Demonstrates high moral and ethical behavior.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

BSN with National Certification or Master’s Prepared Preferred

BLS from American Heart Association

Registered Nurse licensed in IL

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in nursing leadership preferred in surgical services and 10 years min of clinical experience within surgical services

National Certification – Nurse Executive or Surgical Service Focus

Leadership role within a Magnet organization preferred.

Knowledge of the principles and functions of leadership.

Knowledge of nursing delivery systems and care models and their impact on clinical practice.

Knowledge of the interface effects with other healthcare disciplines and systems.

Excellent, detail-oriented oral and written communication skills including group oral presentations.

City of Hope employees pay is based on the following criteria:  work experience, qualifications, and work location.

This position is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
