Registered Nurse, Pain Management

Responsible for working with other healthcare professionals to help treat patients with various injuries, illnesses or disabilities. Monitors patients, administers medications, keeps records, consults with healthcare providers, educates patients and more.


Principal Accountabilities:

1. Maintains accurate, complete health care records and reports.
2. Administers medications to patients and monitors them for side effects and reactions.
3. Prescribes assistive medical devices and related treatments.
4. Monitors, reports, and records symptoms or changes in patient conditions.
5. Assesses, implements, plans, or evaluates patient nursing care plans by working with healthcare team members.
6. Records patient vital signs and medical information.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Provides direct patient care pre-, intra-, and post- procedure. Responds to varied patient needs and assesses patient response and tolerance to procedures. Provides close monitoring of all patients including patients receiving conscious sedation. Responds to all emergency situations within the department. Prepares the patient for the procedure. Explains all aspects of the procedure being performed, reviews with the patient the equipment being used and medications that will be given during the procedure. Confirms the completeness of the chart prior to the patient being transferred to another unit or being discharged from the center. Ensures all charges for services and materials are entered correctly into EPIC. Makes follow up phone calls to the pain management patients. Maintains a safe environment of care. Maintains emergency equipment and performs regular tests to ensure equipment/supply function and quality assurance. Identifies and participates in the resolution of problems related to supplies and equipment. Coordinates the ordering and use of supplies for the department. Provides education. Acts as a nursing resource for information. Assists patients and their families with procedural education. Provides education to the nursing units regarding Pain Management Department Procedures as needed. Helps update changes in Pain Management policy and procedures. Ensures own education on current nursing issues, assists in implementation of The Joint Commission, and assists in the compliance of staff in the Health and Safety Training. Communications with physicians, patients, and hospital personnel in a concise and informative manner. Maintains professional behavior at all times. Strives to establish a pleasant work environment and team focused atmospheres. Returns to work promptly following lunch and breaks. Adheres to hospitals shared values. Shows respect to fellow staff members at all times. Regularly reviews patient documentations for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to regulatory regulations. Performs chart audits to identify areas for improvement. Participates in the growth and development of the pain center while incorporating performance improvement actions. Identifies processes which are in needs of change and assists in the development and implementations of new processes. Involvement in Unit Based Shared Governance. Helps with the mentoring and development of staff members. Represents department in a positive leadership role at all times and in the absence of a coordinator.
