Responsibilities
The Ambulatory Registered Nurse (RN) is a member of the Colon and Rectal Surgery team and works in collaboration with surgeons, residents, nurses, Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistants and other team members to provide high quality patient care. The RN will assist with preoperative and postoperative management of the adult surgical patient. Practice is limited to the outpatient setting however collaboration occurs often with the NP/PA’s working in the hospital setting. Provision of care includes but is not limited to; preoperative patient evaluation and counseling; assistance with minor exam room procedures, interaction with the electronic environment for test ordering and surgical listing, patient education pre and post- surgical, coordination of multidisciplinary care; telephone triage with incoming pre and post- operative patient calls; and overall patient management as directed by the supervising consultant. The RN will be active in working in all subspecialties within the division during staff absences however will have a primary subspecialty focus. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential of all candidates. The applicant must be dedicated to patient education and have strong critical thinking skills. The RN must be very organized, able to multi-task, and be self-driven.
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.
This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
Qualifications
Student or graduate of an accredited, or those in the candidacy process, associate, or diploma nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is required.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020 and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.
Additional Qualifications:
Must have a least ONE YEAR RN experience. Colorectal or surgical experience preferred. RN should have a strong interest in patient education and communications. Must be able to problem solve, work independently and demonstrate strong navigation skills in the electronic environment. Applicant must be self-motivated and work well with minimal direction however asking for guidance when necessary. The RN will assume responsibility for telephone interactions and assume and establish effective collaborative roles with multidisciplinary colleagues. Excellent interpersonal communication skills are essential.

Must obtain prior to start date:
Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
Basic Cardiac Life Support for healthcare providers- BCLS – certificate of course completion required and must not expire within 3 months after start date. A scanned copy of the certificate of completion or transcripts, including your full name, must be attached to your profile to be considered.
We will only accept certificates of course completion from the following providers: American Heart Association (Title: BLS for Healthcare Providers or BLS Provider), Red Cross (Title: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers or BLS for Healthcare Providers), Military Training Network
