Summary:

The SPL Staff RN is responsible for applying the nursing process in the administration of total nursing care of each patient in the Special Procedure Lab environment. Provides optimum patient care througn personal performance and/or leadership of subordinate personnel.

Experience/Education Requirements:

Graduate of an approved school of nursing, BSN preferred.  

License or Certification Requirements:

Responsibilities:

Blood and Body Fluids: There  is a high potential for exposure to body fluids (blood, vomitus and stool) with intravenous devices and administration of drugs create a high risk.  All patients are considered infectious and universal precautions are used for all procedures greatly reducing the risk to personnel.

TB or Airborne Pathogens: Extreme potential for exposure with each procedure, however, universal precautions are used on all cases thus greatly reducing the risk to personnel.

Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):

 Speech: Required to communicate with physicians, patients, families, and staff.

Vision: Required to perform necessary assessments of patients; medication administration; CIS information; observe monitors.

Smell: Helpful to detect electrical fire problems, presence of fumes.

Hearing: Necessary for listening to patient concerns, alarms (e.g., fire, Code 33), intercom information.

Touch: Necessary for comforting patients, operating equipment and handling of instruments.

Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25'-150' waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25'-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs. Carry fire extinguishers up or down 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
