JOB SUMMARY:

Provides direct patient care in the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum setting. Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care. Communicates with providers about changes in patient’s clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in the Perinatal Department. Participates in performance improvement activities and quality assurance.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition. Ability to care for antenatal patients and monitor for complications and change in status. Ability to assess and care for low and high-risk patients in labor, during delivery, and postpartum setting and address any change in condition. Also capable of managing care of 2 labor patients. Able to provide family centered care for a postpartum mother and baby on the mother/baby unit. Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to current guidelines. Will complete newborn resuscitation competency within 90 days of hire and recertify quarterly. Ability to perform, on admission, a head-to-toe assessment on infants and adults and reassessments as per policy. Ability to implement a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of the patient and evaluates effectiveness of teaching (family is included as appropriate). Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicted by the patients’ response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and the skill necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Demonstrates knowledge of fetal monitoring. Identifies FHR patterns and treats appropriately and promptly. Completes intermediate or advanced AWHONN and maintains current by recertifying every 2 years. Communicates appropriately and clearly to charge nurse, co-workers and providers. Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for the interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs. Coordinates and supervises patient care, as necessary. Demonstrates and ability to assist providers with procedures in the perinatal unit. Demonstrates and ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful and emergent situations. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formations of the plan of care. Reevaluates plan of care each shift. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department, with other departments, and with other facilities. Written and computer documentation meet current standards and polices. Documents in QS system accurately and per AWHONN standards. Identifies and addressed psychosocial needs of patients and family. Participates in performance improvement activities and quality assurance projects. Manages and operates all equipment safely and correctly. Reports broken equipment immediately per protocol. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, staff meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice in ongoing education. Attends of staff meetings. Demonstrates the ability to use Healthstream and completes assigned modules. Demonstrates the ability to access the Polices and Procedures on the Hospital Intranet. Communicates effectively in English. Bilingual skill is beneficial. Able to act as scrub technician and circulating nurse during operative procedures in the perinatal unit operating room. Required to scrub a case every 6 months to maintain competency and complete a competency skills pass off at skills lab biannually. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Reads emails weekly. Meets requirement for quarterly bonuses. Able to orient new labor nurses and precept students. 

EMPLOYEES MAY BE REQUIRED TO FULFILL OTHER POSITION RESPONSIBILITES ON A TEMPORARY BASIS OR TO EXPAND CURRENT DUTIES BY UPDATING THE POSITION DESCRIPTON.

Interacts with other department and staff members in a manner which promotes optimum service to the patients and/or the public. Fosters good will among the staff members and community. Demonstrates willingness to perform tasks of a reasonable nature as directed by the supervisor. Upholds Mountain View Hospital confidentiality policy. Supports supervision and adheres to hospital policies in a positive and constructive manner. Treats employee wages and salaries confidentially. Initiates action to prevent the occurrence of any potential problems or nonconformities relating to patient care or supporting activities. Initiates, recommends, or provides solutions through designated channels. Maintains competency through education, training, and in-service activities. Supports and attends on-going education on the unit. Attends bi-annual skills lab. Promotes positive communication in the work environment.  Does not gossip or cause contention among co-workers. Uses time clock effectively. Clocks in and out each shift. Requests PTO as desired
