Function as an independent nurse clinician in coordinating both patient care in the office and ante partum fetal testing for high risk patients to include the performance, interpretation, and reporting of test results, assessment of patient status, educational needs, and follow up care.  Provides education for staff and community and assists with research programs

Responsibilities

Central point of contact/coordinator for all high risk new, consult, and transfer of care obstetrical patients.

 

Reviews patient records for new, consult, and transfer of care patients.

 

Contacts patients to obtain a medical and obstetrical history prior to their initial visit.

 

Obtains outside records from referring provider and/or specialists when appropriate.

 

Assists in rooming patients upon arrival to clinic and reporting pertinent information to the provider.

 

Answers the Triage line and records calls.

 

Recognizes medical situations specific to Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

 

Returns Patient and Physician phone calls in a timely manner.

 

Recognize normal versus abnormal results; prints an accurate, readable report of the test; contact physician when necessary.

 

Correlate the patient’s clinical history with fetal monitoring results and recognized signs and symptoms of maternal/fetal compromise.  Institute appropriate nursing actions for referral.

 

Assess health education needs of patient to provide ongoing evaluation of necessary instructions. 

 

Provide a holistic approach in the care of all patients.

Coordinate additional care for ante partum patients to include follow-up testing or procedures, scheduling, physician’s orders, and hospital admissions.

 

Maintain daily fetal testing schedule, testing forms, statistics, documentation, and collaboration with other health care providers to formulate a plan of care for the patient.

 

Assist with and maintain ongoing knowledge of billing and insurance protocols.

 

Maintain supply inventory and equipment for fetal monitoring and ultrasound to ensure availability for testing and regular daily activities.

 

Provide education to other staff members regarding testing and care of high risk patients, act as a resource on ante partum fetal testing for the community and Outreach Programs, to include Women’s Health Pavilion.

 

Actively participate in research through data collection and development of ideas.

 

Act as a liaison between patients, Women’s Health Pavilion, and Maternal Fetal Medicine regarding patient’s care.

 

Serve as public relations representative to the community.

 

Maintain clinical competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality patient care which includes validation of skill level by passing both verbal and written tests administered by Nursing Supervisor.

 

Promote the philosophy, goals and objectives of the School and the Department by becoming familiar with and complying with policies and procedures.

 

Contribute to the well-being of patients by serving as a positive role model and demonstrating a professional, caring attitude, and behavior towards co-workers, patients, and guests.

 

Attendance, as assigned, is essential to meeting required performance duties.

 

Complete other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduation from NLN Accredited School of Nursing with RN required, BSN preferred. 

 

Minimum one year experience with high risk obstetric patients and minimum one year experience in fetal monitoring is preferred. Must have a valid Virginia license as a Professional Registered Nurse.
