JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse-Hospital functions as a vital member of the healthcare team by demonstrating a customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism self-development, and teamwork. The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families.  The Registered Nurse-Hospital is expected to demonstrate excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal and leadership skills and make decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

WORK SHIFT

Variable 12 hour shifts including every third weekend and every other holiday.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Diploma or degree in nursing.

Preferred/Optional: Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

EXPERIENCE 

Minimum Required: None

Preferred/Optional: Two years hospital nursing experience

Those inpatient facilities participating in the Clinical Nurse Advancement Portfolio (CNAP) clinical ladder, refer to program documents for eligibility to advance/maintain CNAP level.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES 

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position.  Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required:

Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of employment.  Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).

Preferred/Optional:

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit [SICU]

Registered Nurse-Hospital-Critical Care

DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION

The 18 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides 24 hour nursing care to critically ill adult patients.  

Services Provided/Patient Conditions:

This unit provides nursing care to critically ill adult patients with the following surgical and medical conditions: cardiothoracic, trauma, interventional neurologic and neurosurgical, general surgical and patients requiring CRRT. SICU may serve as an overflow unit for MICU or PICU in the event either unit is full and unable to triage.

Staffing Mix:

The SICU Unit is staffed with registered nurses and is supported with nursing assistants and health unit coordinators. Nurse to patient ratio is based on acuity and is usually 1:2 or 1:1.  Registered Nurses function as the primary care giver or as direct supervisors to the care provided by nursing assistants.

Registered nurses complete a 10-12 week clinical and didactic critical care orientation addressing general critical care practices, as well as unit specific practices, or, they have completed the MMC Critical Care Residency Program. Specialty orientations to address acute high risk patients and populations and unit required certifications are completed within the first year of employment in SICU. These include:

This orientation process, as well as periodically scheduled in-services and maintenance of required certifications throughout the year, prepares the nurse for participation in the following duties/responsibilities:

Execution and documentation of the nursing process (assessment, plan, intervention and evaluation), and subsequent notification of a physician when prescribed parameters are exceeded.Parenteral administration of fluids (including electrolytes), blood and blood components, and nutrition.Administration of emergency medications as authorized or ordered.Recognition of and attention to the psychosocial, growth and development needs of the patient and families.Effective and safe operation of electrical/electronic equipment and life support equipment common to the unit (see orientation checklist).Infection control/universal precaution, transfer, electrical, fire and hazardous product identification and safety.Participation in the Emergency Response Team and the Trauma Response Team.Bedside bronchoscopy assistance.Percutaneous tracheostomy assistance.

Patient Population:

Adult patients (>18 years of age) requiring intensive care.

Invasive and non-invasive procedures are planned and equipment is provided to handle emergency and nonemergency situations. This may include BLS, ACLS, subdural and ventricular tapping, bedside bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, tissue debridement, transvenous/thoracic/external temporary pacing, open sternum arrests or tamponade.
