Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager implements supervises and evaluates the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. From admission to discharge plans with consideration of the aging process throughout the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

Provides direct patient care to pediatric and adult patients with bleeding and clotting disorders in the outpatient setting peri-operatively and helps with inpatient coordination
Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of physicians nurse practitioners nurses social worker physical therapist research assistant and practice manager to provide high quality comprehensive care to bleeding disorder community.
Provides telephone triage to patients and coordinates care accordingly involving the healthcare provider referring to clinic or ED help with prescription refills
Evaluates effectiveness of patient care and identifies opportunities for improvement.
Assesses and provides appropriate teaching based on patient and family needs specifically educating new families on disease state teaching patients/families to become independent with factor administration either via port-a-cath access or peripheral access.
On occasion provides in-home teaching or assistance for IV medication administration.
Provides education on bleeding disorders to the community including but not limited to: school visits daycare visits primary care offices local community hospitals.
Participates in unit-based quality improvement and research activities.
Utilizes all available resources to provide quality cost effective patient care.
Assists in obtaining prior authorizations for bleeding disorder medications
Meets and maintains clinical competencies measured by pre-determined credentialing standards mandatory/safety education and completion of Basic Life Support
Identifies growth needs and participates in educational opportunities and professional organizations.
Serves as a role model/preceptor to new graduate nurses and less experienced personnel.
Other information:
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to communicate is a professional manner both verbally and in written form.
Personal appearance must reflect and support basic hygiene and neatness position-appropriate dress infection control and safety standards and project an overall professional image of Brown University Health (Appearance Standard Policy).
Must have experience with IV placements especially in peripheral access of pediatric patients and small babies experience with port-a-caths and other central venous devices.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred.
Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
Past hematology experience preferred especially bleeding disorders or hemophilia.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status. Exposed to patient care environment. Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting positioning and pushing patients on stretchers.
