SUMMARY
Coordinate total nursing care for patients using nursing standards and the nursing process; participate in patient and family teaching; provide leadership working cooperatively with other health care providers. The RN is responsible for providing, coordinating and directing individualized, comprehensive nursing care to the obstetrical patient based upon the nursing process and in adherence to Meadville Medical Centers Mission and Vision Statement. The RN is accountable for her/his own actions, and is directly responsible to the New Life Unit Manager. In the absence of the New Life Manager, the RN is responsible to the House Supervisor. The NLU RN is also responsible for supervising other RN’s, LPN’s and OB Technician.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing Current State of Pennsylvania Registered Nurse Licensure Prefer one year of acute care nursing experience Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certified within one year Satisfactory meets departments’ unit specific annual competencies
Demonstrate accurate judgment/decision making ability consistent with nursing knowledge and skills. When in the charge nurse role, demonstrates leadership ability that promotes optimal unit functioning and Patient care.
Current State Nursing License.
BSN preferred.
Communication skills necessary to effectively: a. Provide instruction to the surgeon, anesthesia, surgical staff, patient and/or significant other b. Provide explanations to the patient and/or significant other c. Explain nursing intervention d. Communicate with other members of the health team.
Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement a plan for nursing care appropriate to the patient, and to solve problems concerning patient’s mental or physical well-being.
Ability to concentrate and prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems, and interact with patients, families, and other team members - often during stressful situations.
Ability to manage patient care unit. Must be able to use the following Management Accountabilities/ Competencies: conflict resolution, staff counseling, problem solving, disciplinary process, policy and procedure implementation, teamwork, staff scheduling, support of management peers, interviewing, budgeting process, cost containment skills.
Current BLS Healthcare Provider card. Must have current ACLS certification or obtain within six months of assignment.
