Title: CHARGE NURSE LEADER: Peri Operative Care Unit

Scheduled Hours: 4-10 HR shifts; starting time 5a-3:30p;

Job Summary:

The Peri Operative Care Unit (POCU)Charge Nurse Leader demonstrates unit operational proficiency and role model’s leadership behaviors that are critical to ensuring efficient unit operations, patient throughput, safety, quality and service. The charge nurse interacts and collaborates with members of the intradisciplinary team to fulfill the requirements of safe patient care, promote teamwork and a positive unit culture.

Role model’s professional behaviors, adaptive and collaborative communication style through partnership with other professional within and outside the department.Assigns registered nurses and ancillary personnel to patient care activities; provides for appropriate delegation of patient care tasksProvides for peer accountability through peer coaching for problem solving and measures that promote quality, safety and service through peer coachingProvides for Service Recovery of patient/family concerns and complaintsManages patient delays. Utilizes chain of command when necessaryPromotes the recognition of staff accomplishments. Manages up staff to unit management.Assists in the assessment of staff performance through peer review.Addresses unit/staff issues and concerns and promotes problem solving.Assists in conflict resolution through communication of concerns to management.Demonstrates positive attitude and professional behaviors as a representative of Surgical Services.Reports unit issues and concerns in a timely manner to Surgical Services Management. These include but are not limited to: team behaviors, associate performance, process and safety issues.Provides leadership as an effective change agent through professional accountability while holding others accountable to meeting unit practice, quality, safety, and service standards.Assists unit management with the management of unit productivity and unit staffing to meet budgetary targets while ensuring safe patient careCollaborates staffing with other Peri anesthesia DepartmentsCoordinates unit staffing to promote staff involvement in committee, task force, and educational opportunities.In collaboration with Bed Coordination assists in the coordination of patients to the Surgical Hold Unit. Serves as a resource to the Surgical Hold staff.Provides clinical care

Position Requirements:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current IL RN licenseBSN preferred, ADN acceptable with agreement for nurses with less than 12 months of experience to enroll in BSN completion program to be completed in four years.  Nurses with more than 12 months experience in direct patient care must possess a BSN or obtain either BSN or Advocate Aurora Health (AAH) recognized nursing certification within one year of the date of hire or becoming eligible to sit for certification, whichever is later.Minimum of two years RN nursing experience in PACU, Critical Care, Preop/Post Op experience requiredCharge experience requiredCertifications/education required for the nursing specialty within 2 years of hire date (CNOR)Current AHA CPR and ACLS maintainedCurrent AHA PALS preferredBasic understanding of operative procedures and expected post-op outcomes.Basic knowledge of symptoms and possible complications of surgery, anesthesia and initial treatments.Able to recognize the needs and behaviors of pediatric through geriatric age groups.Patient care responsibilities may involve: Working until all patients are discharged from facility or staff available to take over on the patient’s care.Must be flexible in work hours and be able to rotate the required shifts including days scheduled to address surgery schedule.Being exposed to hazardous materials or life threatening diseases.Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
