Nurses work in collaborative environments with strong interdisciplinary teams focused on a patient centered care model in a richly diverse work space Under the direction and general supervision of the Nurse Manager the registered nurse utilizes evidence based practices in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act policies and procedures of the hospital and as directed by the medical staff The registered nurse who through knowledge and ability uses the nursing process to develop a plan of care which includes standards of practice to meet the physical emotional spiritual cultural and educational needs of the patient and familyThe role of the preoperative nurse during the preanesthesia phase of care will be to provide nursing care to patients and their designated support person on the day of surgery or procedureEducation and Professional PracticeAssesses the knowledge level of patient or designated support personProvides education regarding the expected psychosocial response nutritional management medication management and pain and comfort management wound management and expected responses to the operation or procedureActively involves the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting hishertheir perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation processPreanesthesia patient Assessment and MonitoringPerforms pre admission assessment including physical assessment and review of pertinent labs and relevant preoperative diagnostics testingPrepares and administers ordered medications safely using the rights of safe medication administrationPrepares for and monitors patient that has received procedural sedationManages patientrsquos other co morbid conditions as applicableVerifies that all the pre operative preparation has been completeVerifies safe ride homeCollaborates and effectively communicates with the entire perioperative team to ensure safe and timely transition to the operating room or procedural areaPostanesthesia Phase II Assessment Monitoring and Discharge PlanningProvides ongoing assessment and documentation of careEvaluates of patientrsquos discharge readiness based on discharge criteriaProvides education and discharge
