Summary of Job Duties:The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, non-judgmental, trauma-informed care to the sexual assault victims. This will include a medical-forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, referrals for appropriate resources (such as shelter, medical and psychological follow-up, and advocacy support), and participation in legal proceedings. The SANE is expected to follow protocols established by the Program Director and/or management of the Digital Health Sexual Assault Assessment Program. The SANE may participate in providing educational opportunities related to sexual assault care topics. The SANE will agree to the certain amount of call days or hours per month set by the program director.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate of Nursing, RN plus three years of experience as a registered nurse

Education, special or professional:

Computer skills, evidence collection, prophylaxis treatment for STI, and therapeutic communications.

Completed 40 or 64 hours of Sexual Assault Nurse Examination didactic

History of providing acute medical forensic sexual assault exams to patients who have experienced sexual assault

Preferred Qualifications:

BSN

SANE-A certification


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

Be able to sit at a desk for longer periods during an exam.

Be able to push a telemedicine cart to do live training as needed.

It will require minimal walking and standing.

SANE will aid in recognizing injuries that need further medical attention related to sexual assault.

Aid in coordination of care such as local advocacy needs and resources that can assist the sexual assault victim SANE documentation packet for the medical-forensic care.

Perform a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography, and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate.

Document detailed injuries accurately with the support of photographic evidence.

Maintain chain of custody for each sexual assault exam and adhere to evidence protocols.

Maintain professional standards that do not create a conflict of interest with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality

Must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on-call.

Guide appropriate prophylactic medications per program protocols.

Provide testimony as a fact (possible expert) witness to any/all cases related to the care of a sexual assault victim.

Responsible for maintaining clinical expertise as a SANE.

Maintain current Registered Nurse Licensure or higher.

Complete the initial and ongoing educational requirements as identified by the TeleSANE Program.

Debrief as needed to maintain emotional and physical wellness as advised by TeleSANE Program.

Maintain open communication with the TeleSANE Program director and core team regularly.

Share individual expertise with the other members of TeleSANE when requested

Maintain competency by maintaining active performance of cases with no lapse of greater than six months.

Attend monthly staff meetings.

Participate in quality assurance chart and photograph review process as

determined by the TeleSANE Program.

Adhere to all administrative, clinical, and employment policies and procedures.

Apply for SANE-A testing within 18 months from the hire date if not nationally

certified before the hire date with the International Association of Forensic Nursing.

Maintain SANE-A credentials once awarded.

Have completed an approved 40 or 64-hour Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner didactic.

Commit to cover a minimum number of shifts, holiday coverage, and other scheduling requirements as determined by the TeleSANE Program.

Participate in professional development as determined by the TeleSANE Program, including staff meetings, conferences, and in-services.

Attend Webinars as scheduled by the program director related to SANE.
