Are you an experienced veterinary technician with a passion for cardiology and cardiac surgery? The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University is seeking a skilled Registered Veterinary Technician III to join our elite Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery Unit. In this advanced role, you’ll work alongside leading cardiologists, assist in complex cardiac procedures, and provide top-tier care to our animal patients. If you’re ready to take your skills to the next level and be a critical part of lifesaving treatments, we want you to be the heartbeat of our team! This position performs specific nursing/patient care functions, and assists veterinary students, interns, residents, and faculty in a variety of specialized cardiovascular procedures. The individual should demonstrate extensive abilities in problem solving and task resolution and be capable of exercising a great deal of independence of thought and judgment within the specialty area. This position directly supports the cardiac surgery program and provides cross-coverage of the medical cardiology service and the hybrid operating room technologist – as such, the breadth of expertise required is broad and multi-faceted. In cardiac surgery, the technician will communicate with families in advance of an appointment, manage inventory for the cardiac surgical practice, run the operating room during surgical procedures, and occasionally perform the duties of a scrub nurse during more complex surgical procedures. In providing cross-coverage to the medical clinic, this position works with the cardiology clinicians by independently performing blood pressure measurements, ECGs, and placing 24-hour Holter and event monitors (Zio monitor). While performing these diagnostics, the technician will teach the students and alert clinicians of any abnormalities noted. They will be responsible for inputting charges onto the cardiology billing forms and respond to messages left on the cardiology voice mail and messages sent by email to the cardiology and cardiac surgery service. Client interaction and communication, as well as communication with internal consulting services and referring veterinarians, are an integral part of the job. This position requires data input and analysis skill sets with familiarity with Microsoft Office software. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the date of hire; the department will not be offering visa sponsorship. Essential Duties Job Duty CategoryCardiac Surgical Nursing and Patient Care Duty/Responsibility The Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery Technician will provide optimal patient care including assessments, monitoring, treatments, and nursing care for cardiology patients and patients from other services such as equine, exotic and food animal, with known or suspected cardiac disease. + Collaboration with students, interns, residents, fellows and clinicians while diagnoses and optimal treatment plans are being formulated and assigned specific treatment for the care of the patient. + Assist in the evaluation of patient status, diagnostic imaging, ECG , BP, laboratory tests, set up for various procedures, and scrub in to procedures as needed. + Ensure that patients are seen and receive necessary diagnostics in a timely fashion by students and clinicians. + Assist in diagnostic work-ups, handle and restrain patients, facilitate scheduling of radiographic procedures, fluoroscopy requests, surgical equipment requests, scheduling of anesthesia, etc. + Assisting in discharging of day cases and overnight patients including completion of billing forms, writing or assisting students and clinicians with writing of dismissal instructions, visually inspecting patients prior to discharge, and confirming the accuracy and submission of prescriptions. Percentage Of Time25 Job Duty CategoryTechnical Expertise/Clinical Competence Duty/Responsibility The specialized technical and clinical expertise of the Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery Technician will provide service to the cardiology clinicians as well as to the patients in ways including but not limited to: + Anticipate the needs of clinicians during procedures and provides technical support when scrubbed in. + Familialize surgical supplies and provide clinicians with appropriate ones when scrubbed in. + Accurately taking and recording indirect blood pressure measurements using either the Doppler or oscillometric methods and alerting clinicians with abnormalities. + Positioning animals for recording electrocardiograms; including recognition of abnormal cardiac rhythms. Ability to obtain 6 & 12 lead ECGs. + Knowledge of standard M-mode and 2D echo views and ability to recognize cardiac disease from an echocardiographic study. + Able to measure standard echocardiographic views. + Placing intravenous catheters and collecting venous blood samples. Administers IV, IM, SQ, and oral medications. + Performs therapeutic phlebotomies. + Apply and/or teach students and residents in the application of Holter monitors or Event recorders. Assist with transmitting and receiving Holter monitor and Event recorder data, and to scan Holter recordings. Manage inventory of monitor equipment. + Setup, cleanup, and assist with cardiology interventional procedures, diagnostic catheterizations, cardioversions, and cardiac surgical procedures. + Performs abdominocentesis. Teaches students to record standard ECGs. + Record and teaches students the measurement of indirect arterial blood pressure. + Instructs students on how to restrain patients during examinations. + Provides students and house officers with orientation to and overview of the Hybrid Operating Room and typical procedures performed. + Gives coaching and feedback to students on cardiology diagnostics and patient workup. Duty/Responsibility + The Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery Technician is expected to play a contributory role in keeping all of the areas used by cardiology clinicians, students, and patients clean, safe, and well stocked. + Clean, dry, and correctly package re-usable surgical supplies and submit for sterilization. + Retrieve re-sterilized supplies and return to appropriate storage location. + Stocking scanning room, treatment room, and rounds room with all necessary supplies and forms and filling alcohol and gel bottles. + Retrieving sterile supplies from Central Supply and putting them away. + Maintaining cleanliness of the treatment room, scanning room, cath lab, and rounds room (including microwave, sink, and refrigerator). + Assist with maintenance and care of the Hybrid Interventional Suite. + Maintain equipment and work with vendors for service and upgrades. + Ensure equipment (including computers and monitors) are turned off at the end of the day. + Responsible for backing up echocardiographic studies to appropriate storage servers (e.g., iSite, TomTec, SyngoDynamics) and completing echo studies on RIS worklist. Responsible for backing up ECG recordings to the T drive at the end of each week. + Responsible for updating the cardiology white board with new students names and contact information.
