This vacancy is located in the Rehabilitation Department of Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, LA (East Feliciana Parish). ELMHS is the largest 24-hour, multi-site, state psychiatric complex, comprised of residential, outpatient and inpatient services.

The position may be filled as either a Probational or Job Appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency wide permanent status employees); by Detail to Special Duty; or as a part-time, temporary WAE. Current permanent status, classified employees may be required to accept a Probational appointed if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.

This job will require the selected candidate to train clients at our facility in a vocational trade such as Carpentry, Welding, Wallboard/Plastering, Painting, Small Engine Repair, Horticulture or Automotive Repair. Candidates with experience in these trades are preferred.
The incumbent in this position will plan, organize, direct, and teach ELMHS clients in the Work Therapy Program on various trade shop functions. In addition, the incumbent will educate clients on specific instructions directly related to trade shop functions, as well as conduct classroom and hands-on training.
This position is in a Career Progression Group and may be filled as a Rehab Instructor 1 or Rehab Instructor 2 depending on the qualifications of the candidate selected. Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in rehabilitation services, social services, human resources, education, therapy services, or nursing; OR
Six years of full-time work experience in any field; OR
A bachelor's degree.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Differs from Rehabilitation Instructor 2 by the close supervision received and by the lack of independent responsibilities.

Differs from Rehabilitation Evaluators by responsibility for vocational conditioning rather than vocational assessment.
Examples of Work
UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION
Provides instruction, day programming, and behavior modification services to persons with disabilities to facilitate self-sufficiency. Disabling conditions include, but are not limited to, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular and neurological diseases, chronic psychiatric diagnosis, mentally retarded/learning disabled, deaf, and blind.
Utilizes skills and techniques which address learning ability and receptiveness of different age groups--adolescent to adult.
Simulates work environment utilizing behavior management techniques and promotes positive worker traits.
Formulates individual training programs for each client with supervisory review based on counselor recommendation and/or evaluator assessment.
Participates in staffings with other rehabilitation professionals, social workers, educators, the client, and the client's family members to provide feedback relative to client's behavior and performance.
Observes, records, and completes written reports of client's progress on a regular basis with supervisory review.
Ensures client's safety by demonstration in the use of machinery and equipment and constant client observation.
Provides basic skills training and simulated work activities in one of the following areas: Industrial Arts, Business, or Home Economics/Independent living.
Maintains equipment, supplies, and material inventory with supervisory review.
