Your Opportunity

As part of our Engineering team, you would analyze data, draft implementation plans for production process optimization. Seeking out ways to maximize efficiencies by eliminating the waste of valuable resources that directly impact our overall operating costs. You are instrumental to the manufacturing of Smithfield, Eckrich, Nathan’s Famous, and our other product brands, to meet the needs of our customers and consumers.

The Manager, Reliability Engineering is responsible for implementing and guiding efforts across the organization to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment and processes that could adversely affect facility operations. This individual will develop, improve, coach, teach and train reliability program strategies and elements as well as champion the transfer and implementation of best practices. The Manager, Reliability Engineering will have a well-developed understanding of facility protein equipment/processes and the Maintenance & Engineering (M&E) processes required to sustain a high performing maintenance and equipment reliability department. This knowledge and experience enable the effective leadership and influence required to improve an M&E organization within a  facility team, including directing lower-level Reliability engineers, effectively working with peers, and influencing the optimal reliability decisions by facility management. 

Responsibilities

Works from a corporate perspective with facility reliability personnel and across functional departments to coordinate and administer standardized maintenance and reliability strategies for existing and new equipment programs.

Responsible for and leads the identification, establishment, coaching, teaching and training of facility reliability personnel on Key Performance Indicators.

Responsible for the planning, development and deployment of Smithfield Engineering and industry best practices in maintenance management and reliability engineering.

Responsible for and supports the facilitation, oversite, coordination, and administration of reliability elements of asset health assurance, criticality analysis, equipment hierarchy, RCA, component reliability, Operator Driven Reliability, predictive and preventative maintenance plan procedures, equipment maintenance support of daily maintenance effort, technical training, parts standardization, stores management, bill of materials, operational reliability, and reliability centered lubrication

Responsible for consolidating and standardizing approaches for preventative/predictive maintenance tasks and maintenance repair techniques from a corporate perspective for assigned Smithfield facilities

Works closely with facility maintenance, engineering personnel, corporate resources, and equipment vendors to coordinate the development of engineering solutions and effectively identify root causes and address identified areas for improvement for repetitive equipment failures, and other maintenance problems to reduce the need for maintenance while improving costs and reliability

Identifies potential for cost reduction through improved equipment reliability, extended parts life, reduced labor cost, and other reliability-related improvement techniques

Evaluates plant maintenance training needs and participates toward establishing and adjusting programs to span immediate and upcoming skill gaps, along with promote opportunities for personnel to attend.

Works within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)/SAP and utilizes its functionality to correlate the data for reliability analysis

Facilitates the sharing of best practices, root cause solutions and procedural changes across the organization while ensuring the implementation of transferred best practices in an effort to maintain standardization and improve equipment performance

Using historical data and current operating conditions, the ideal candidate would create a living matrix to best forecast cost of ownership along with data to support future replacement or upgrades.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering or related field and 5+ years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2+ years of demonstrated experience in team management/development or project leadership is required.

Knowledge of engineering principles and techniques related to food processing and the meat industry, preferred.

Ability to apply sound engineering principles to operational and design issues.

Proficient in SAP and CMMS preferred

Ability to communicate technical ideas and concepts effectively

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other Microsoft Suite products.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational planning, teamwork, analytical reasoning and adaptability.

Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.

Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Travel is required with extended overnight stays.

Must be able to travel 75% of the time.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position may have supervisory responsibilities and will provide training and guidance to engineering and maintenance professionals.
