Relief Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician

The Chino Cogeneration facility, located in Chino, California, is a 27 MW natural gas-fired power plant. It operates using a General Electric LM2500 combined cycle cogeneration configuration, which enhances efficiency by simultaneously generating electricity and thermal energy. This setup allows the facility to provide reliable power while maximizing fuel utilization and minimizing environmental impact.

Opportunity Summary

The Relief O&M Technician is an operations position that assists in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the supporting equipment and systems. The Relief O&M Technician will carry out all routine round and readings, water/gas chemistry analysis, inspects and monitors operating components and reports plant status, just as any other operator at the plant. 

The foundation of this position is to have a qualified operator available to cover any short or long-term vacancies, vacations, or other situations that require additional operations support and to assist the other employees with plant operations tasks and maintenance activities. 

Primary Functions

Your scope of responsibility as Relief O&M Technician will include the following primary functions: 

Assist with plant start-up, shutdown, and normal operations by following procedures, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance. Operate major auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, demineralized water systems, generator cooling systems, and other electrical and mechanical equipment. Conduct operational tests and inspections, making minor repairs and adjustments to maintain proper equipment conditions, and document maintenance activities. Perform routine water chemistry analysis and operate continuous emissions monitoring equipment to ensure regulatory compliance. Monitor system data by reading meters, gauges, and instruments, and conduct visual and auditory inspections to detect malfunctions. Identify and report abnormal conditions, implementing corrective measures within operating procedures. Provide relief support to other O&M Technicians during absences or shift changes to maintain operational continuity. Perform routine plant maintenance, including inspecting, repairing, and servicing equipment to ensure efficiency and safety. Use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to enter data, update records, and support maintenance activities. Maintain detailed logs of operational data, maintenance work, and incidents to support performance monitoring and analysis. Administer and enforce safety programs, including training and adherence to protocols, to protect personnel and equipment. Assist in troubleshooting PLCs and control systems, including diagnosing issues, replacing control cards, and terminating wiring. Execute Control Room Operator instructions, including clearing, tagging, testing, and safely preparing equipment for service. Complete additional tasks assigned by the Plant Manager, including special projects and maintenance duties. Participate in plant-specific training programs to enhance technical skills and job proficiency.

Working Relationships

The Relief Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician reports to the Plant Manager and works closely with other plant personnel to ensure smooth operations and effective communication across shifts.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position follows a day-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, with eight-hour workdays. The Relief O&M Technician will be required to cover other day-shift or night-shift schedules, as well as vacations and vacancies, with reasonable advance notice. Extended working hours, varied shifts, and weekend or holiday work may be required based on schedules, workload, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts will also be necessary.

Compensation

The initial starting compensation will range from $43 to $56 per hour and will include an annual performance bonus.

Job Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. An associate degree or technical certification in industrial maintenance, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field is preferred. Relevant experience in plant operations, maintenance, and repair may substitute for formal education. Advanced training or certifications in safety regulations, CMMS, or specialized equipment are beneficial. Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining power generation equipment, including turbines, generators, and related systems in a gas turbine power generation facility. Strong skills in equipment monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair within a power plant environment, including proficiency in using meters, gauges, and automatic recording devices. Ability to interpret and apply technical manuals and facility operating procedures to start, stop, adjust, and modify equipment operations within recommended parameters. Proficiency in using CMMS for maintenance planning, work order management, and adherence to maintenance strategies. Competence in performing preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and technical equipment, including writing, and submitting work orders and maintaining detailed records. Knowledge of safety protocols and environmental regulations, with experience in ensuring compliance and managing safety programs during operational shifts. Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.
