Job Description

The Research Applications Engineer (REDCap) is responsible for the support, development and maintenance of REDCap and related research applications. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing backend components, ensuring the system's reliability, scalability, and security. This role involves close collaboration with researchers, IT staff, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions that meet the evolving needs of the organization.

Essential Job Functions:

Develop and maintain backend components of the REDCap system using PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript.  Customize and extend REDCap functionalities through module and plugin development.  Manage database operations, including data migration, query optimization, and performance tuning.  Ensure system security and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR).  Collaborate with front-end developers, project managers, and researchers to gather requirements and deliver solutions.  Perform regular system updates, backups, and troubleshooting to maintain system integrity.  Provide technical support and training to end-users and team members.  Monitor system performance and implement improvements to enhance reliability and scalability.  Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Associates or Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (preferred)

3-5 years of experience in research applications support

2 years of dedicated REDCap backend support experience, including managing dev and prod environments, adding modules, installing updates. (required)

REDCap-Specific Knowledge: The applicant should be familiar with the technical tasks needed in order to support critical REDCap functionality, including:

System configuration

User and project permissions

Auditing, compliance, and security

Database and eDCF design

Automations

Reporting Tools

Longitudinal studies

Administering multiple environments (e.g., DEV and PROD)

REDCap Mobile App and MyCap

External modules (SMS/Texting, MyCap, FHIR EHR Application, etc)

REDCap API

Technical Expertise: Proficiency in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and AJAX. Experience with RESTful APIs and server management (Linux, Apache/Nginx). (required) 

Database Management: Strong skills in SQL, database design, query optimization, and performance tuning. (required)

Other Skills (i.e. Project Management, Negotiation)

Security and Compliance: Knowledge of data privacy laws, regulatory compliance (HIPAA, GDPR), and security best practices. 

Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve technical issues. 

Collaboration and Communication: Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. 

Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines. 

Adaptability: Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to changing requirements.
