The Urban Systems Lab is an interdisciplinary research, design and practice space at The New School that provides knowledge and analysis for developing more equitable, resilient, and sustainable cities. The Lab’s work advances cutting edge science, data visualization, and computation to develop systemic solutions to social and environmental challenges driving inequity and injustice in urban areas. Position OverviewWe are seeking a research assistant to join our team to assist in the development of a digital game focused on climate change, nature-based solutions and urban resilience. This game is envisioned as an educational tool that immerses players in the challenges of urban planning and resilience building using Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), inspired by the board game “Ekos: The Path to Resilience” (ekosgame.com).
The ideal candidate has some experience in game design and is passionate about climate issues. You will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers through an EU Horizon Programme called GoGreenNext, an initiative that aims to support cities and regions to achieve their climate targets. This position reports to the Associate Director of the Urban Systems Lab and is a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on climate education and urban resilience.

Responsibilities:
Assist in the design and development of a digital game focused on climate change, nature-based solutions, and urban resilience. Conduct research on climate issues, urban planning, and nature-based solutions to inform game content. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and designers to develop game mechanics, narratives, and visual elements. Test and refine the game prototype based on feedback from team members and external users. Assist with documentation, including creating reports and presentations to share project progress. Support project-related tasks as needed, including coordination with the EU Horizon Programme team and external partners.


Work Mode: In Person- Employees in this position are expected to work on-campus during regularly scheduled work hours. The role is expected to require 15-20 hours per week.
Salary Range:$30.16/hr

Some experience or coursework in game design, digital media, or interactive design. Strong research and organizational skills. Experience with design tools or programming languages used in game development (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine, or similar) is a plus. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
