Research Assistant
Job Description: The purpose of the Research Assistant position is to drive infectious disease genetic research in the Bailey Lab by performing integrative laboratory work primarily related to high-throughput genomics and sequencing of humans and pathogens. The Research Assistant will perform standard molecular biology assays including sample preparation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) as well as preparation of high-throughput sequencing libraries and high-throughput next generation short and long-read sequencing as well as basic qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results. This position will also provide assistance to other lab members on various research projects as well as researchers from around the world as part of a larger scientific team. This is a fixed term position with a current end date of two years from date of hire which may be extended based upon available funding. Job Qualifications - Grade 7 Education + Required: B.S. or B.A. in Biology or related field (relevant course work and strong interest related to infectious disease bioinformatics, and/or genetics and genomics preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience. + Undergraduate research experience in a lab setting preferred + Experience with next generation sequencing (particularly illumine sequencing) preferred + Familiarity with Linus-based systems and programming experience preferred Job Competencies + Ability to work as part of a team + Strong organizational and time management skills + Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and professionally with co-workers + Ability to be organized and productive + Ability to follow detailed instructions + Excellent record keeping and quantitative skills Criminal background and education check required Job Qualifications - Grade 8 Education + Required: B.S. or B.A. in Biology or related field + Required: 1-2 years post-graduate experience (relevant course work and strong interest related to infectious disease bioinformatics, and/or genetics and genomics is a plus) + Experience with next generation sequencing (particularly Illumina or ONT Nanopore sequencing) is a plus + Familiarity with Linux-based systems and programming experience is a plus + And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
