Research Assistant
Job Description: Summary This part-time Research Assistant position will assist with various aspects of experimental work and general operation in the lab of Dr. Alexander Jaworski in the Department of Neuroscience. This includes assisting with maintenance of the laboratory's rodent colony, helping support the laboratory infrastructure and personnel, and performing experimental procedures. The Jaworski lab studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms of brain wiring. The mature nervous system contains billions of neurons that are interconnected in a highly specific manner and communicate through trillions of synapses. The lab is interested in understanding how this complex wiring pattern is established during embryonic development. To this end, a variety of experimental approaches is employed, including molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology, and mouse genetics. This position is part-time for the 18.75 hours per week and has a fixed term end date of one year from date of hire, which may be extended based upon availability of funding. QualificationsEducation and Experience + Required: Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, molecular biology, or related biological sciences + Required: Prior experience working with mice (grade 7) + Required: 1-2 years’ prior related experience working with mice (grade 8) + Prior lab experience involving histology and cell culture is a plus Job Competencies + Interest in scientific research. + Ability to work independently. + Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills, training, and cultural backgrounds. + Careful planning, attention to detail, and reliable execution of assigned responsibilities. + Ability to rapidly learn requisite skills and to master intellectual scope of projects. + Knowledge of basic molecular biological techniques (DNA extraction, PCR). + Knowledge of immunohistochemical methods. + Knowledge of sterile work technique for cell culture. + Knowledge of and hands-on experience with basic mouse husbandry and handling basic skills with MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. + Excellent verbal and written communication skills + Willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community CRIMINAL BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION CHECK REQUIRED.
