Research Assistant

This is a research assistant position in the Vector Biology Lab in the School of Biology and Ecology at the University of Maine. Responsibilities focus primarily on activities of the New England Regional Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease, funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although the research assistant will perform duties pertaining to other grant funded projects. The research assistant conducts laboratory- and field-based scientific research following established protocols, organizes and manages data, gives presentations for scientific and lay audiences, and assists in preparing scientific publications. Much of these tasks are completed in coordination with other members of the lab, including a Senior Research Associate and the faculty supervisor. Typical hiring salary for this soft-money funded position is $33,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
Required:
+ Generally has the education associated with a bachelor’s degree in Entomology; Wildlife Ecology; Biological Sciences; Natural Resource Management or related field and 1-2 years of experience in entomology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Previous experience conducting entomological field work.
+ Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.
+ Ability to work effectively in teams with students, research associates, and the faculty supervisor.
Preferred:
+ Previous experience conducting research involving medical and veterinary pests, including mosquito, tick, and biting fly collection and identification.
+ Previous experience (including coursework) in insect taxonomy.
