Research Assistant

Job Summary

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the College of Medicine is hiring a Research Assistant to work in the laboratory of a NIH funded Principal Investigator.

Essential Functions

This position involves investigating molecular and cellular approaches to understand the essential pathways of malaria parasites, which could be targeted for the development of novel antimalarial drugs. The research assistant will perform CRISPR-based gene editing to study pathways related to pH regulation and mitochondrial functions of malaria parasites. Responsibilities include cultivating P. falciparum parasites using human red blood cells, conducting conditional knockdown (or knockout) of essential genes, and performing phenotypic analyses of transgenic parasites using various experimental approaches. The research assistant will also be responsible for assisting the Principal Investigator with daily laboratory operations at the BSL2 level. This role involves handling infectious agents, laboratory chemicals and sterilizing equipment.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Life Science or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.  Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.

Additional Information
This position is classified as Non-Exempt, grade G. Compensation for this grade ranges from  $15.58 to $$ 23.37 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
