If you have a passion for making a difference, this could be your opportunity to join our transformative team.   POSITION TITLE:  Research Assistant I   POSITION SUMMARY: The Schief Lab at Scripps Research is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual with an interest in vaccine research and development. The Research Assistant will be a contributing team member of high throughput protein production activities for research and development of vaccine candidates for multiple public health threats such as HIV/AIDS, Influenza, and Malaria. We are looking for a Research Assistant to conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments, operate and maintain specialized equipment, and help develop new experimental procedures.

The Research Assistant will contribute to multiple projects and will coordinate their activities with other lab members to optimize experimental progress. Will be involved in laboratory work required to produce and analyze new research vaccine candidates. Lab activities include ELISA, protein purification by chromatography from mammalian and E. coli cells, protein concentration and biotinylation, DNA preparation, maintenance of cell lines, gel electrophoresis, as well as molecular biology methods such as PCR, library preparation, and FACS analysis. On the in vivo side they shall perform a variety of routine scientific tasks directed at HIV vaccine development in transgenic mouse models. Mouse colony management, genotyping, and mouse husbandry. Mouse dissection and tissue processing for long term storage of relevant cell types. Preparation of in vivo immunogens; RNA, DNA and protein. In vivo injections (IM, IP, SubQ) and non-survival surgical techniques. Blood collection and sera processing (murine). Detailed record keeping of large scale, mouse experiments over extended periods of time with precise time point management via online database platforms.

This position will mainly involve DNA preparation (Maxiprep) and in vivo work in our mouse models. 

RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:   Will perform multiple laboratory methods under minimal supervision, independently and in collaboration with others to meet common goals and will maintain lab equipment and consumables as required or assigned. Independently conduct a wide variety of standard laboratory techniques/procedures.  When necessary may use judgment to adapt standard methods and techniques.  Receive instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions.  May provide interpretation and initial analyses of results.  May troubleshoot and modify procedures. 

REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained. Requires 1-3 years experience. Candidates possessing a Master’s degree, 0-2 years experience required. Candidate should be an excellent team player with effective verbal and written communication skills, must be self-motivated and highly organized with strong record-keeping skills.    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Must be comfortable with the use of animals in research and must be sensitive to ethical considerations associated with animal work. They will be required to handle mice on a regular basis. This position requires strong attention to detail and multiple periods of intense concentration. Familiarity with BSL-2 protocols and best-practices as well as proven problem solving and troubleshooting abilities is a plus. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position works in a laboratory and vivarium environment. Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

COMPENSATION: The expected hiring range for this position is $20.67 to $25.06 per hour, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
