Job Title: Research Assistant Intern Status: Temporary Position (TM )

Description (Purpose and Function):

The SCCC DICR Program offers participants the opportunity to choose from 17 areas of research in the Biomedical Sciences, including Bacterial Pathogenesis, Cancer Biology, Gene Expression/Molecular genetics, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Stem Cell/Regenerative Medicine.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Individuals will be introduced to the type of projects encountered during graduate research training and lead to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences.

In addition to laboratory experience, DICR students will participate in professional development activities including weekly workshops and seminars. They will spend ten weeks pursuing individual research projects in the laboratories of UMMSM faculty members. Participants will gain experience in modern research techniques and have an opportunity to plan and execute an experimental strategy to answer a scientific question. Students will always be supervised by faculty or their designee while in the lab and by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) staff during workshops and seminars.

Qualified candidate must be a current sophomore or junior (other undergraduates considered). Students who desire to pursue a Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D., and students who are minorities and/or from groups underrepresented in the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply. Students have no citizenship requirement.

Rate: $6000 for 10 weeks FLSA Status: Non-Exempt General

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required

Experience:
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

• Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
• Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions
