The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Dermatology has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate 1 to work in Miami, FL. The Research Associate 1, SOM supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates to advance his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research.

Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures.

Participates in the publication of significant results.

Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.

Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.

Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.

Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.

Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.

Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.

Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.

Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.​

Department Specific Functions

The Research Associate 1, SOM will work on-funded skin research projects under the supervision of the lab head (Principal Investigator/PI) and senior staff.  S/he will use a variety of model systems and techniques to conduct basic and translational skin research.

The model systems include in vitro (cell culture), ex vivo (skin organ culture) and in vivo (mice) models.  The techniques include standard and innovative techniques to analyze DNA, RNA, protein, lipid; microbiology analyses; cell and tissue morphology/histology; cell, tissue and organismal appearance and function.

S/he will help to maintain cell/skin organ culture; maintain mouse colony; collect samples; extract DNA, RNA, protein, lipid and microbes for analyses; carry out cell and histological analysis including tissue sectioning and staining; etc.  S/he needs to maintain well-organized, dated, detailed, and up-to-date laboratory notes, both physical and electronic, which serve as a record of the rationale, experimental design, materials and procedures used, any changes to the work as performed, results, data analysis and interpretation, and suggestions for future experiments.

S/he will help prepare manuscripts, presentations, grants, etc., and help to train other lab members.

S/he will help with general lab maintenance (e.g., ordering supplies, maintaining equipment).

S/he needs to adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                    

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field

Prior lab research experience is highly desirable but not required

Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Commitment to the University’s core values.

High levels of attention to detail

Strong oral and written communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
