What we want
The Research Associate is responsible for independently supervising two laboratories that include separate research projects; the candidate will: 1) design, plan, conduct and coordinate experiments; 2) evaluate, select, and apply research techniques (flow cytometry, ELISA assays, immunohistochemistry, behavioral assays, histology); and 3) collect, keep, analyze, prepare and present research data. This role will supervise, train, and coordinate undergraduate students who work in the labs. The Research Associate will also maintain and operate various laboratory equipment.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
+ Two years of relevant professional experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment
+ Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks
+ Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Preferred Experience:
+ Experience with animals, flow cytometry, microscopes, anesthesia
+ Two years of laboratory experience with rodent models and assays for cognitive and social behavior
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
+ Animal compliance training
Responsibilities:
Research Experiment Coordination
+ Leads the research activities of two labs. Coordinates with the principal investigators of both labs regarding the priorities and objectives of research experiments conducted. Independently plans, organizes, and coordinates the experiment schedule based on information these planning meetings.
Molecular assays
+ Conducts assays, such as multiplex assay, cytokine assay, LPS Elisa assay, iFABP ELISA assay, flow cytometry, dissection of gut, brain, and vasculature, isolation of tissue (lymph nodes), RNA extraction, genotyping for mouse breeding colony, SCFA extraction and analysis.
Immunohistochemistry experiments
+ Conducts immunohistochemistry experiments, such as cryostat sectioning, gut histology, tissue preparation, imaging of brain and gut morphology, amyloid plaque staining, image analysis both quantitative and qualitative.
Laboratory Management
+ Manages day-to-day operation of two labs. Organizes and maintains laboratories. Maintains storage upkeep and inventory of liquid nitrogen cell line, chemical inventories, and makes sure labs are inspection ready.
+ Purchases chemicals for experiments, software updates for computers, and consumables. Aids in purchasing animals for experiments .
+ Supervises undergraduate student assistants working in the labs.
Animal care
+ Animal care, husbandry, maintenance of breeding and aging colony (including upkeep of transgenic colony). Behavioral testing such as: Barnes maze, open field, rotarod, DigiGait, burrowing.
+ Data Analysis
+ Prepares, analyzes, and presents data, particularly behavioral and flow cytometry data.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
