Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey in the field of oceanography? We are seeking a passionate Research Associate to join our team! In this role, you will play a pivotal part in research activities, utilizing your advanced knowledge in science to perform both independent and supervisory tasks requiring keen discretion and judgment. You will support a molecular biology project while also being able to contribute to an Imaging FlowCytobot operation. This role also requires the unique opportunity to travel monthly to field sites with heavy equipment. Some responsibilities include preparing proposals for funding agencies, operating sophisticated research equipment, and supervising graduate students and other lab/field personnel. Opportunities to Contribute
+ Conducts and coordinates experiments, applying standard research techniques and keeping detailed records.
+ Assists with installation, operation, and repair of research equipment.
+ Performs data and statistical analysis using computers and technical equipment.
+ Evaluates and summarizes experiment results, storing data in a shared repository.
+ Maintains laboratory organization and travels to field sites for work, repairs, and maintenance.
+ Plans and manages logistics for field site travel, collecting temperature/time-sensitive samples.
+ Trains undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research.
+ Utilizes summarized results in scientific and clientele-oriented publications.
+ Contributes to peer-reviewed publications and funding proposals, including data preparation, figure generation, and writing.
+ Maintains financial accounts for research projects.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a Biology-focus degree within Chemistry, Oceanography, or Marine Science
+ Two years of related experience in specialized/relevant field of research, which could include e xperience in laboratory techniques related to molecular biology, such as accurate pipetting, DNA/RNA extractions, PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, and sterile technique
+ Willingness to learn new computational skills, including computer programming, and experience with computers, including file organization, Microsoft Office Suite
A well-qualified candidate will also possess
+ Valid Driver’s License
+ Related experience in microscopy, culturing algal cells
+ Experience in electronics and computer programming, such as writing code in R or Python
+ Experience working in a Unix computing environment
+ Ability to positively and professionally communicate verbally and in person
+ Ability to keep careful written and electronic records of work performed
+ Ability to work independently and organize your daily and weekly schedules
Salary and Special Note
+ Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected hire’s education and experience.
+ Availability: Must have the ability to travel to and from field stations while transporting equipment and samples in a timely manner at least once per month.
+ Special Note: This position is funded from grant and/or contract funding, which is renewed through provisions of the grantor of the contract. Therefore, this position is contingent upon continuation of funding from these grants and/or contracts, as well as satisfactory job performance.
